Calvin Hoffman has stirred up a hornet's nest with his book
"The Murder of the Man Who Was 'Shakespeare,' " which is referred -
to by his publishers, Julian Messner, Inc. (8 W. 40th, NY 18), as "one
of the greatest literary detective stories."
It is Mr. Hoffman's contention that Christopher Marlowe was
the author of all the works accredited to Shakespeare. But those
who differ with him contend that Shakespeare generally borrowed
his themes from other authors, but that Mr. Hoffman's claims are
far off the mark and that his proofs are not conclusive.
Here is Mr. Hoffman's claim: That Marlowe was not murdered,
as is . recorded, in 1593, but that he fled from England to Italy, in
order to escape being condemned to death. The claim is that he spent
his life in exile, that he continued to write from there and that he
used William Shakespeare's name as a convenient one, since he was
unable to append his own to his plays and poems; for, officially, he
was supposed to' be dead.
Marlowe was accused of blasphemy and Mr. Hoffman's book
list "blasphemies as sent to-her Highness." Jews are listed, in the
opinions of Marlowe, as "a rude and gross people;" there is an attack
on Moses for having made the Israelites to travel 1L years in the
wilderness instead of less than one year "to the intent that 'those
who were privy to most of his subtleties might perish and so an
everlasting_ superstition remain_ in the hearts of the people"--Lin
addition to attacks on Christianity.
• Among the authorities quoted by Mr. Hoffman is Dr.. Samuel
A. Tannenbaum, who, in his book, "The Assassination of Christopher'
Marlowe," "went on record to say that..Marlowe's death from the
wound described was a medical impossibility."
Considerable space is devoted by Mr. Hoffman to a discussion
of Marlowe's "The Jew of Malta." Hitherto, it has been accepted
as fact that Shakespeare drew upon this play for his theme in
"The Merchant of Venice" and for his portrayal of Shylock. Mr.
Hoffman contends that in "The Jew of Malta" there is "a wholly
astonishing reference by Marlowe himself as having been alive
after 1593."
Major proof offered by Mr. Hoffman that the Shakespearean
plays were written by Marlowe is incorporated in' a series of par-
rallelisms, which include the following:

The happiness reflected on the face of this young mother from
North Africa is typical of the joy felt by the thousands of immi-
grants arriving each month in Israel. But by mid-October the
United Jewish Appeal must raise $10,000,000 in cash to speed the
movement to Israel of the tens of thousands of men, women and
children who are still waiting, and who need help at once. A paid
up pledge means our local campaign can remit cash to UJA—for
lin:Mediate allocation to UJA's chief constituent agencies, the
United Israel Appeal and the Joint Distribution Committee.

Literary Detective Story: Murder
Of Man Who Was 'Shakespeare'

-111-•

So much for the, proferred proof. If it does not indicate that
Marlowe is the author of all the 'Shakespearean works, it surely
proves that Shakespeare borrowed his anti-Semitic theme from
Marlowe.
Regardless of the viewpoint on the Calvin Hoffman book, "The
Murder of the Man Who Was 'Shakespeare,' " it surely will intrigue
the reader, because it is, as the publishers claim, "one of the greatest

of literary detective stories."

Hadassah to Name Seminary for Sobels

A new Thecares Seminary in
Jerusalem, dedicated to the train-
ing and development of teachers
to work with young immigrants
brought into Israel by Hadassah,
through Youth Aliyah, will be
named in memory of Louis and
Minna H. Sobel, of New York,
who were drowned in the hurri-
cane-swept schooner Marvel in
Chesapeake Bay last month.
Mrs. Abraham Tulin, acting
president of Hadassah, and Dr.
Miriam Freund, Hadassah Youth
Aliyah chairman, announced that
the Sobel Building would be

of 1956 with American and Israel
officials in attendance.
Regarded as one of the coun-
try's most gifted social work
executives in the child care field,
the late Mr. Sobel was closely
related for the last five years
with Hadassah's youth rehabilita-
tion programs in Israel, serving
as chairman of the Hadassah
Youth Reference Board.
The decision to name the re-
cently-completed building in Jer-
usalem in 'honor of the' Sobels
was incorporated in a resolution
adopted by the national board of

formally dedicated in the Spring Hadassah.
