Alliance Sees
Good Future for .
Jews in Morocco

asp

PARIS,(JTA) — A play for
peace in Morocco that will per-
mit the Jews of that country "in
cooperatiOn with Moslems and
Europeans, to find again the road
to progress in mutual accord and
confidence" was issued by the
Alliance Israelite Universelle,
French Jewish organization that
maintains a network of schools
and police institutions through-
out French North Africa.
The Alliance expressed "soli-
darity and sorrow in their afflic-
tion" with the Jewish communi-
ties of Morocco, particularly
• those in the Casablanca region
which have been subjected to
Arab nationalist excesses.
"With nearly a hundred years
experience in Morocco.," - the or-
ganization declared "the Alliance
knows NATell the fundamental
qualities of Moroccan Moslems
and despite the tragic conse-
quences of the excesses- by cer-
tain elements of the population,
the Alliance continues its trust in
them. The Alliance expresses the
wish that peace will return to
Morocco permitting the Jews in
that country, in cooperation with
Moslems and Europeans, to find
again the road to progress in
mutual accord and confidence.
"Founded in order to assure
justice to Jews everywhere they
suffer diserimination, - the Alli-
ance cannot conceive of Jewish
well-being without that of their
fellow-citizens, freely, equally
and fraternally United.• The Alli-
ance eagerly joinS its voice with
all who desire for the divided
Morocco of today to prepare a
future where man may effec-
tively enjoy the rights which the
world recognizes as just and law-
ful," the statement concluded.

South African
Public Life Free
Of Jewish Issues

JOHANNESBURGH, (JTA) —
Despite the changed political" at-
mosphere which has existed in
the Union of South Africa during
the last few years, the country's
public life has been substantially
free of any Jewish issues, accord-
ing to the annual report of the
executive council of the South
African Jewish Board of Depu-
ties. The report was published in
connection with the opening of
the Board's twentieth congress in
which some 400 delegates of
South African Jewish communi-
ties will participate.
The report noted that Jews
continued td play a part in pol-
itical and civic matters and com-
mented that "it is a satisfactory
feature of the position that, for
the most part, there is a realiza-
tation that they • act in these
spheres as individual citizens, not
in any sense as spokesmen of the
Jewish community."
The report added that "gen-
erally there has been an under-
standing of the relationship, of
the Jewish community to the
State of Israel and of the interest
displayed by South African Jew-
ry in the welfare of the Jewish
State. This has been in line with
the government policy which ha's
shown a practical sympathy for
Israel in many concrete forms."
Referring to the fact that
"overseas newspapers of some
standing published articles
charging the present government
with pursuing policies unfriend-
ly to the Jewish community," the
report said that "we deem it our
duty- to controvert these false
reports."
