Cantor Silverman to Chant 'ghacharis Rename 7 Mile

Cantor Jacob Silverman, as-
sociate cantor of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek for over 20 years, has been
engaged by Beth Aaron Syna-
gogue to lead the Shacharis serv-
ices during the
coming High
Holy Days.

season will be
ushered in With
Selichot prayers
at 12 midnight,
Sept. 10, in the
newly - complet-
ed sanctuary.

Selichot for the Modern Jew."
Cantor Judah Goldring, assist-
ed by a 10-voice choir, will chant
the service.
Admission to the Selichot
service is open • to the general
public without tickets, states

president, who added that a
limited number of member-
ships are still available.
The religious school will re-
open on Sept. 11, under the su-
pervision of Berhard Panush,
school director. Two sessions,
from 9:15 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m.
t to 12:45 p.m. will meet in the
synagogue building.
Courses covering kindergarten
through grade 10, will offer stud-
ies in history, Bible, customs,
Zionism and Israel, current
events, songs, holidays and religi-
ous observances.

grades 7 to 10 has been intro-
duced this year. In addition,
students in grades 8 to 10 par-
ticipate in Sunday branches of
the Beth Aaron Juniors, spon-
sored by the Men's Club. .
A consecration course, begin-
ning in grade 9 for two years
is conducted by Rabbi Gorre-
lick. All classes receive special
instruction from Cantor Gold-
ring.
Dr. Marvin A. Last, chairman
of the education committee,
urges parents to register their
children immediately, as late
registrants last year were placed
on a waiting list. Dr. Last's com-
mittee is at the synagogue from
7 to 9 p.m., each evening, except
Friday, to accept registrations.

Israel Young Marrieds

Set 'Calendar Capers';
Elect New Officers

"Calendar Capers," a dance to
be followed by entertainment and
refreshments, is planned by the
Young Marrieds Group of Temple
Israel as its opening affair of
the season.
A membership event, "Calen-
dar Capers" will be held at 8:30
p.m., Sept. 11, in the temple
building. The orchestra of Eddie
Lopez, who - formerly played with
Desi Arnaz, will be featured for
dancing, states Dr. Donald Simon,
vice-president of membership,
who . is arranging the program.
The calendar theme will be
1 carried out in a show to follow
the dance in the temple youth
hall. This part of the evening's
program is directed by Mrs. Sey-
mour Ellman.
Officers of the Young Marrieds
Group, elected at the annual
meeting, include Sidney Dwor-
kin, president; Mrs. Jerome Arfa,
vice-president of program; Dr.
Simon, Mrs. Jerome Oppenheim
and Mrs. Harold Boigan, secre-
taries; and Frank Simons, treas-
urer.
Serving on the board of di-
rectors are Messrs. and Mesdames
Earl Hordes, Ben Katzman, Fred
Marrich, Daniel Arnold, Charles
Braun, -Irwin Shapiro, Dan Peis-
ner, Al Borkin, Sidney Seyburn
and Moe Traurig.
The dance is open to all young

Moving Festivities

The occasion is "Moving Day,"
to be celebrated by congregants
of the synagogue, its auxiliaries,
friends and guests as the day
Beth Abraham moves into its
new center at West 7 Mile and
Greenlawn.
Highlight of the celebration
will be the transfer of the
Torah Scrolls from the old
building on Linwood and Stur-
tevant to the new structure,
which will be ready for use
during the High Holy Days.
Morris Davis and Julius Perry,
arrangements co-chairmen, an-
nounce that the celebrants will
assemble at the Linwood building
at 11:30 a.m. to begin a parade to
the new center.
Arriving at the building at 12
noon, the Torahs will be received
amid appropriate ceremonies,
which will include the presenta-
tion of colors by the Department
of Michigan, Jewish War Veter-
ans. Two flags also will be given
by JWV to the congregation.
Rabbis Joseph Thumin and
Israel I. Halpern will officiate at
religious services accompanying
the Torah removal. Other par-
ticipants will be Louis Ellenbo-
gen, congregational president,
and William A. Genser, building
chairman.
Judge Nathan J. Kaufman, Dr.
Harry Newman and Abraham
Nusbaum, building fund chair-
men, will conduct other portions
of the program. A social hour
will follow in the building's so-
cial hall.
Announcement has been made
by Rabbi Halpern and Harry
Ribiat, chairman of the Beth
Abraham educational commit-
tee, of the affiliation of Dr.
Max. Kapustin as principal of
-the Sunday school.
Dr. Kapustin, the director of
Hillel Foundation at Wayne Uni-
versity, will have at his disposal
new classroom and youth facili-
ties of the new center.
Registration for the school is
being acepted weekday evenings
and on Sunday in the lobby offibe
of the 7 Mile building. For in-

Cantor Hyman Adler,. on his
recent trip_ to Israel, the land of
his birth, conducted sabbath
services in Jerusalem's famed
Sherith Israel Synagogue.
He was assisted by a choir of
30 voices--10 men and 20 boys.
It was in this same synagogue a
number of years ago that, Cantor
Adler sang as a boy with the
choir.
During his tour of the Jewish
state, Cantor Adler made a num-

ber of personal appearances over
the Israel radio and for charity.
He brought back to Detroit
with him his many traditional
liturgical chants which he will
render for the first time during
High Holy Day services at Cong.

The National Jewish Welfare
Board's commission on Jewish
chaplaincy has received an offi-
cial communication from Gen.
Lewis B. Hershey, director of the
Selective Service System, an-
nouncing that all local draft
boards have been asked to give
"favorable consideration, when-
ever possible" to requests by
Jewish registrants for postpone-
ment of their physical examin-
ation or induction into the Armed
Forces until after Rosh Hashanah,
Yom Kippur or Sukkot, if such
examination or induction is
scheduled for these days.
Rosh Hashanah begins at- sun-
down Friday, Sept. 16, and ends
at sundown, Sunday, Sept. 18.
Yom Kippur begins at sundown,
Sunday, Sept. 25 and ends at
sundown Monday, Sept. 26. The
first two days of Sukkot are
Oct. 1 and 2 and the last two
are Oct. 8 and 9.
