Why the Fuss Over
The Right to Petition?

Editor, The Jewish News:
As a regular reader of your
weekly column in The Jewish
News, I could not overlook your
item in the Aug. 5 issue, dealing
with the petition addressed to the
judiciary committees of the U.S.
Senate and House of Representa-
tives.
The petition asked for "public
hearings to be held on all bills
pending before the 84th Congress
in relation to the immigration
and naturalization laws of the
United States."
Since rriy name was publicized
in connection with the signing of
that petition, in a derogatory
manner by some and compli-
mentary by others, I feel impelled
to speak my mind on the matter.
When I received a copy of that

MRS. SOLL GAYNOR

Shirley Bernice Finstein be-
came the bride of Dr. Soll Gaynor
in a recent ceremony solemnized
by Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrelick,
who before coming to Beth Aaron
Synagogue was spiritual leader
at Cong. Beth Israel, in Cam-
bridge, Mass., where the Fin-
stein family are members.
Mrs. Harry Moorstein, the
bride's sister, was matron of
honor, and Dr. Alex Gaynor
served as best man. The bride is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Finstein, of Cambridge,
Mass. Dr. Gaynor's parents are
Mr. and Mrs. William Ginsburg,
of Detroit. _
Following dinner and a recep-
tion in the home of Mr. and Mrs.

petition, which was formulated
and circulated b _ y the eminent
and courageous clergyman, Dr.
Henry H. Crane, I considered it
worthy enough to give my en-
dorsement and signature. By
signing that petition I felt that
I was exercising one of the time-
honored rights and practices of
an American citizen.
It never occurred to me that I
would have to hesitate signing
such a petition for fear of arous-
ing the displeasure of a Congress-
man or the wrath of a Senator.
Nor did it occur to me that the
exercise of such a basic Amer-
ican privilege would result in a
classification of- my action as
"Un-American" by those in dis-
agreement with the petitioner,
or that it was an act deserving of
special commendatory citation by
those in agreement with the pe-
titioner.
