M, First Woman Cantor Engaged by Reform Temple in Oceanside OCEANSIDE, N. Y., (JTA)- Mrs. Betty Robbins, 31, has been named cantor of Temple Avodah, a Reform synagogue in this Long Island suburban community. The vote of the trustees of the con- gregation, which serves 200 fami- lies, was unanimous. Mrs. Robbins, believed to be the first woman ever named a cantor, has sung in synagogue choirs since her youth when she sang in a German Jewish syna- gogue in Danzig. Later, with her family, she fled to Australia where, during World War II, she met and married Sheldon Rob- bins, then an American service- man. She has been singing the soprano role with the Temple Avodah choir since it was or- ganized three years ago. She will commence her duties as cantor with the Rosh Hashanah services in September.
