Moscow Chief Rabbi Not
Able to Attend Israel Fete
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
joint world conference of Miz-
rachi and Hapoel Mizrachi organ-
izations, in session here, was in-
formed that Rabbi S. M. Schlei-
fer, Chief Rabbi of Moscow, had
cabled a response to an invita-
tion to attend the conference in
Israel's capital.
The assemblage stood while the
Moscow rabbi's message was read.
It stated: "Your cable reached
me but I regret I am unable to
participate in this holy confer-
ence. My health does not permit
me to take a long trip during the
summer. My religious greetings
to those who study the Torah
and adhere to its tenets."
- Among those present who
heard the message read was Rab-
bi Reines, 90-year-old father-in-
law of Rabbi Schleifer.

P. M,
First Woman Cantor
Engaged by Reform
Temple in Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, N. Y., (JTA)-
Mrs. Betty Robbins, 31, has been
named cantor of Temple Avodah,
a Reform synagogue in this Long
Island suburban community. The
vote of the trustees of the con-
gregation, which serves 200 fami-
lies, was unanimous.
Mrs. Robbins, believed to be
the first woman ever named a
cantor, has sung in synagogue
choirs since her youth when she
sang in a German Jewish syna-
gogue in Danzig. Later, with her
family, she fled to Australia
where, during World War II, she
met and married Sheldon Rob-
bins, then an American service-
man. She has been singing the
soprano role with the Temple
Avodah choir since it was or-
ganized three years ago. She will
commence her duties as cantor
with the Rosh Hashanah services
in September.

Beth Aaron Members
To Worship on Holidays
In Completed Structure
Members of Beth Aaron Syna-
gogue will worship during the
High Holidays this year in its
completely finished sanctuary,
which was only recently dedi-
cated, announces Jack Shenk-
man, congregational president.
The seating committee will be-
gin its sessions Sunday morning.
They will continue to meet daily
from 7 to 10 p.m. and Sundays,
10 a.m. to 1 p.m., under the chair-
xnanship of William Liberson.
In view of the large member-
ship and the synagogue's limited
capacity, there will be no seats
available to non-members; how-
ever, a limited number of mem-
berships are available. Inquiries
may be made to Phillip Chapnick,
membership chairman, UN 1-0773.
Serving with Liberson on the
seating committee are Louis El-
lenson, co-chairman; Morris Buch,
Morris Fenkell, L. W. Friedman,
J. I. Grant, H. Green, J. Harris,
N. Jaffe, M. Kaminsky, M. Katz,
S. Lankin, Dr. M. A. Last, L.
Levine, S. Noveck, J. Schneider
and M. Silverman.
"The question was asked:
Which of the two is of greater
importance — study or practice?
Rabbi Akiba answered study is
more important. Then the other
rabbis said study is more im-
portant for study leads to prac-
tice." —Talmud, Kiddushin 40B
