CINCINNATI (JTA)—A state-
ment denying a newspaver report
that Dr. Nelson Glueck, president
of Hebrew' Union College-Jewish
Institute of Reform, who is now
on an archaeological mission in
Israel, will become a rabbi of
a Reform congregation to be es-
tablished there this year was
issued here by HUC-JIR. The
statement read:
"Some months ago the College-
Institute announced that it will
establish, in Israel, the American
Jewish • Cultural Institute, a
branch of HUC-JIR. This latter
institution will not be a con-
gregation. It will be a school for
research for graduate students,
and for those College-Institute
students who wish to come there
to catch the spirit of the pro-
phets of old, by which they were
able to utter the great ethical
truths, the only verities than can
save our world today.
"Through our projected cul-
tural center of American Juda-
ism in Palestine, we hope to bring
the - spirit of American Liberal
culture to Israel, and to demon-
strate to the Israelis how we have
tried to effectuate a synthesis of
the finest ideals of America.
The Institute in Israel will in-
clude a chapel.
"The Obllege-Institute is co-
operating with the World Union
for Progressive Judaism and with
other Liberal Jewish agencies in
the United States toward creation
of an indigenous Liberal Jewish
movement in Israel. But the
American Jewish Cultural Insti-
tute is an entirely separate en-
deavor. Dr. Glueck would cer-
tainly have confided in us if he
had any plans for establishing
or leading a congregation in
Israel."

The compositions -=of Julius
Chajes, Detroit pianist-composer,
were prominently featured at
two outstanding music festivals
this past week.
His Sonata in A-Minor for vio-
lin and piano was played by
Mischa Mischakoff, concert mas-
ter. of the Detroit and Chautau-
qua Symphony Orchestra.
Chajes, himself, played the
piece at the opening chamber
music concert in Chautauqua,
N. Y.
Chajes' 142nd Psalm for chorus,
organ and soloists was performed
at the Berkshire Music Festival
under the direction of Hugh Ross.
Two Compositions* by Chajes
have just been published in New
York by Transcontinental Music
Corp. They are Trio in D Minor
for Violin, Cello and Piano and
Sonata in A Minor for Violin and
Piano. Both works have been
performed numerous times here,
in Europe and in Israel.
The trio is dedicated to the
memory of Abraham Cooper, the
late civic leadej and philanthrop-
ist, and the sonata is dedicated
to the Dora and J-41ius Green
Fund of the Detroit Music Study
Club.

Senate Criticized
For Not Approving
Sobeloff Nomination

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
failure of the Senate to act on
President Eisenhower's nomina-
tion of Solicitor General Simon
E. Sobeloff to a Federal judge-
ship was severely criticized in an
editotial in the Washington Post
and Times Herald. The belief
was expressed in the editorial
that the Senate would confirm
Mr. Sobeloff's nomination when
it meets next year.
The paper predicted that Mr.
Sobeloff would decline an in-
terim appointment. Mr. Sobeloff
himself could 'not be reached for
comment on this prediction. The
editorial in the Washington pa-
per said that the failure of the
Senate to act on his nomination
was "inexcusable." It pointed
out that it is the courts that
are "penalized" because the Sen-
ate satisfied "the whim of a few
politicians."
The Solicitor General, who
was nominated by President Ei-
senhower last month to be judge
of the Fourth Circuit Court of
Appeals, refused to comment on
the Senate Judiciary Subcom-
mittee's failure to act or even to
hold 'hearings' on his nomination.
Mr. Sobeloff, architect of the
plan generally adopted in the
Supreme Court decision to -end
segregation in the public schools,
ran into opposition from South-
ern Senators Eastland of Mis-
sissippi and Johnston - South
Carolina .

kindness extended by relatives, friends and
organizations, and for the numerous con-
tributions made in Mrs. Kaufman's memory."

The Officers and Members of the

SKVERER RELIEF SOCIETY

Wish to express our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Louis
Robbins and family, on the death of her beloved hus-
band Louis Robbins. Mr. Robbins, one of the founders
of- our organization, had given much of his time and
effort towards the success of our organization, and will
be sadly missed by all Iiis friends and co-workers.
Blessed be his memory.
