Berlin Agrees to Pay
$3,500,000 on Claims
BERLIN (JTA) — T h e West
Berlin city administration has
tentatively agreed to pay nearly
$3,500,000 to two Jewish , suc-
cessor organizations in a global
settlement for claims for heir-
less and communal Jewish prop-
erty seized by the Nazis in what
now constitutes the three West-
ern sectors of this city.
The agreement, which still has
not been signed and must be
studied and approved by the
city's parliament, was reached
after many years of wearisome
negotiations in which Dr. Na-
hum Goldmann, head of the
Conference on Jewish Material
Claims Against Germany, inter-
vened on several occasions.
The arrangement provides that
Berlin will pay about $239,000
in cash to the successor organiz-
ations — the Jewish Restitution
Successor Organization, set up
in the United States, and the
Jewish Trust Corporation, or-
ganized in Britain. In addition,
industrial products worth $3,-
200,000 will be shipped to Israel
by the Berlin municipality
through the Israel Purchasing
Mission. The Israel Government
will refund the value of the
goods to the two successor
groups probably over a period
of two years.

California Law to Give
Jews Vote on Holidays
LOS ANGELES — Governor
Goodwin Knight has signed ,into
law an amendment to the Cali-
fornia Election Code providing
for absentee voting for those who
cannot go to. the polls on Elec-
tion Day when it falls on a re-
ligious holiday. The bill was in-
troduced into the California
Legislature by Assemblyman
Jesse Unruh of Los Angeles. It
brings to frdition a plan proposed
by the Pacific Southwest Re-
gional Office of the Anti-De-
famation League of Briai Brith
to prevent disenfranchisement of
Jews during years when Election
Day may coincide with one of
the Jewish High Holidays. The
law goes into effect Sept. 7.

made by United Hias Service that
persons wishing to transmit cash
gifts to residents in Israel may
do so through the agency's Re-
mittance Service in Israel cur-
rency, at the rate of IL 1.80 for
each American dollar.
There is no limitation on the
amount which a remitter may
send. United Hias Service makes
no charge for its service. A fee
of 50c is collected with each re-
mittance to • defray the banking
transfer charge.
