Too Much Zionism?

New Sunday School
To Open in December

• DENVER, (JTA) — A newly
incorporated School for Reform
Judaism will open here in Sep-
tember, its faculty composed of
parents of the children in the
school, it was reported in Inter-
mountain Jewish News here, be-
cause. according to Stanley Buka,
a board member of the new
school, ". . . the Temple (Eman-
uel) is not teaching the kind of
Reform Judaism that we were
taught as children. They are
teaching too much Zionism and
nationalism rather than stressing
that Judaism is a religion."
Leaders .of the new Sunday
school, almost all of them mem-
bers of Temple Emanuel, said that
the school was not a project of
the American Council for Juda-
ism, but they added that a modi-
fied form of the ACJ curriculum
would be used and text books
will be purchased through the
Council. Col. Stanley Shubart an
ACJ leader, told the Jews that
lfts than one percent of the par-
ents affiliated with the new
school are members of the Coun-

Asked about the nature of in-
struction with regard to Israel,
Mrs. Herman Stein, principal of
the new school, said that the sub-
ject would be taught "histori-
cally." She also described herself
as "vociferous on the subject
that this new school does not
represent a split in the Temple."
Neither the Temple's rabbi, Joel
Zion, nor its president Philip
Milstein were in Denver at the
time of the announcement and
were, therefore, unavailable for
comment. Leaders of the school
project had informed Rabbi. Zion
of their plans before he left on
his vacation.
