Mrs. Ida Lurie Dies;
Was Sons' Spark-Plug

Her sons' lifetime recognition
of her inspiration in their mer-
cantile successes were the major
tributes to Mrs. Ida Lurie, of
15362 Grandville Rd., who died
July 21 at the age of 83.
Funeral services were held
Sunday at Temple Beth El.
Her sons—Nathan W. and John
E.—founders of Wrigley Markets,
never passed up an opportunity
to pay respects to • their aged
mother and to give her credit for
having encouraged them in their
business venture.
When John Lurie accepted the
chairmanship of the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign, two years ago,
Mrs. Lurie again gave 'him her
blessing,- and she urged him on
in his second year's important
communal venture as AJC chair-
man in 1955.
-It was 35 years ago that John
opened a little grocery market
on Grand River and Euclid. He
was then 21. His elder brother,
Nathan, then 23, gave up a job
as tobacco salesman to become
his brother's partner—with the
mother's blessing that they should
be good partners. Their phe-
nomenal successes and the rise
of Wrigley's attested to' her-wis-
dom, and the sons always spoke
of Mother as the guardian angel
in their continuing business ex-
pansions. Their 58 stores last
year grossed $i10,000,000.
Mrs. Lurie came to this coun-
try from Lithuania 65 years ago
with her husband Joseph. They
settled in Detroit seven year later
and Joseph Lurie peddled dry-
goods.
When he, started business for
himself, her son John was a
grocery clerk. He -and Nathan
borrowed $200 to open the Grand
