Cooperative Venture
To Prepare History
Of Cleveland Jewry

CLEVELAND (JTA) — A co-
operative venture for the writing
of the history of the Jewish com-
munity of Cleveland is being
undertaken as the result of an
agreement between the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America
and the Jewish Community Fed-
eration of Cleveland, according
to an announcement by Max
Freedman, federation president.
The federation recently concluded
the agreement with the American
Jewish History Center, sponsored
by the seminary.
Originally planning to prepare
its own community history as
part of Cleveland's Tercentenary
observance, the federation auth-
orized an allocation for the
project. As the federation's local
committee undertook a search for
a director for writing the history,
it was learned that the American
Jewish History Center had al-
ready started its own study of
the Cleveland Jewish community,
as one of its nation-wide series
of community histories.
The agreement provides that
the federation is to receive a
complete set of notes gathered
for the Cleveland study. The fed-
eration will also have the oppor-
tunity to determine whether it
wishes to be a joint sponsor or
publisher of the history. The
federation has undertaken to en-
list the cooperation of many
Cleveland Jewish organizations
and agencies in the project and
has authorized an allocation of up
to $5,000 for secretarial and re-
search for the local study,

TREES TO A GOLFER POET
... submitted by Carl Winer .. .
"I think that I shall never see a
hazard rougher than a tree—a
tree o'er which my ball must fly
if on the green it is to lie; a tree
which stands that green to guard,
arid makes the shots extremely
hard; a tree whose leafy arms
extend, to kill the mashie shot I
send; a tree that stands in silence
there, while angry golfers rave
and swear. Niblicks were made
for fools like me, who cannot
ever miss a tree."

SOL AARON sends this from
the West Coast . . . about the
tourist enjoying the wonders of
California and becoming a bit
amused at a Californian's com-
ments on the scenery ... Walk-
ing through a grove of citrus
trees, he said, "What beautiful
grapefruit!" . . . "Oh, those lem-
ons are a bit small this year,
owing to a comparatively bad
season." . . . "And what are those
enormous blossoms?" asked the
tourist . . . "Just a patch of
dandelions." . . Presently they
reached the Sacramento River
. . . "Ah," said the tourist, grasp-
ing the idea, "somebody's radia-
tor is leaking."

`IN BALTIMORE, recently, at
one of the night ball games she
attended while visiting there,
Ann Gelman -remembered that
she had a letter in her purse that
she should have mailed .. . She
waited until she saw a nice
looking, well-groomed man arise,
as if to leave the game . . .
"Would you mind dropping this
in somewhere as you go out?"
Ann asked ... He bowed slightly,
smiled and graciously said he
would be only too happy to serve
her in mailing the letter . . .
Nearby, after he had passed, Ann
heard a felloW remark for her
benefit. that she had given the
letter to the right man 6 . . The
man was Arthur Summerfield, of
Flint, postmaster general of the
United States.

BONN, (JTA)—The Bundestag
has approved a law extending the
deadline for individual victims
of Nazism to file claim for in-
demnification for another year,
until Sept. 30, 1956. The measure
must still receive the consent of
the Federal Council, upper house
of the German Parliment, but no
opposition is expected from that
quarter.
