Strike Hits Israel Govt.
Over Professionals' Wages

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Doc-
tors, teachers and other profes-
sionals employed by the govern-
ment and public went on a 24-
hour strike throughout Israel to
underline their demands for an
immediate increase in salary. A
Cabinet spokesman, meanwhile,
announced that the government
would stick by its decision not
to act on the wage demands
until August and that "no gov-
ernment" could take any other
action only a week before na-
tional elections.
Skeleton staffs remained on
duty in hospitals and clinics
maintained by the government,
the Histadrut medical network,
the Hadassah-supported medical
pro-gram and the medical facili-
ties of various municipalities.
These staffs will care for
emergency cases only.
The doctors, who together
with university teaching staffs,
set off the national wage de-
mands of the professionals, have
been joined by lawyers, engi-
neers, architects, dentists and
veterinarians. Top administra-
tive civil servants, however,
have not joined the stoppage.

Israel Assured of
Continued Friendly
Turkish Relations

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — No
changes in Turkish-Israel rela-
tionships are contemplated, ac-
cording to a Turkish reply to an
Israel government note sent im-
mediately after the conclusion
of the Turco-Iraqui pact. The
Turkish answer was handed to
Israel's Ambassador in Ankara.
Reports reaching Turkey indi-
cate that in Syria and Lebanon
there is a movement among
leading Arabs to end the hostility
against Israel and to seek a way
to reach peace with Israel. The
visit of Ambassador Eric Johns-
ton to the Middle East at the end
of this month may pave the way
for such action, it is believed
here.
The Turkish government, which
is the major partner in the
Turkish-Iraqui defense treaty, is
anxious to see conciliation be-
tween Israel and the Arab coun-
tries. It is felt here that Israel
would be ready to join a Middle
East defense pact immediately
after concluding peace with the
Arab countries. It is also believed
here that the admission of Israel
into a general Middle East de-
fense pact would greatly streng-
then the defense of the area, in
which Turkey has so far taken
the lead.
