AK Opposes Teaching
Bible in the Schools

NEW YORK (JTA) — A state-
ment clarifying the attitude of
the American Jewish Commit-
tee on various aspects concerning
religion in education was issued
by the organization. The state-
ment is doubtful about proposals
to teach a "common core" of reli-
gion or basic theological princi-
ples. It also rejects the proposal
to invite clergymen into the
classroom to give religious in-
struction to children of their re-
spective faiths.
The AJC statement of views
also makes clear the stand of
the organization on the following
issues concerning religion in edu-
cation questions:

Released time: Opposed be-
cause "it threatens the inde-
pendent character of the
school" by providing a govern-
mental constraint in support of
religion; it is a "mechanism for
divisiveness" that gives "over-
zealous teachers" an opportun-
ity to exercise "subtle seetari-*
an pressures."

Ceremony at Naming
Of Street in Brazil
For Theodor Herzl

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — A
street in this city was named for
Theodor Herzl, founder of mod-
ern Zionism, at a ceremony at-
tended by leaders of the city
administration, of the Jewish
community and hundreds of resi-
dents, Jewish and non-Jewish of
the city.
Addressing the gathering, Levi
Neves, municipal councillor, who
was president of the city council
last year when a bill was passed
to name a street for Dr. Herzl,
praised the vision of the Zionist
leader and hailed the contribu-

at his hydroponic experimental
station in the center of Jerusalem:
The 82-year-old agriculturalist
told newsmen that the crop he
harvested from a score of small
tanks was sufficient to feed five
families with vegetables for a
year. He insisted that growing
vegetables in water was vital to
Israel not only in the event a
war cut the Jewish State off
from food supplies from abroad,
but also because Israel can only
cultivate some 6,000,000 dunams
(1,50,000 acres) of a total of 20,-
000,000 dunams.
The decisive factor in the
growth of vegetables by this
method, which can increase Is-
rael's output eight times, is the
strength of the sun over this land.
Dr. Sosskin said.
