The Israelite was founded July 15, 1854, by the late Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise. President Eisenhower's • tele- gram to the editor of the Israel- ite reads: "To you and the staff of the American Israelite, I send con- gratulations on its 100th anniver- sary. At this season of the year all of us are reminded of the American War of Independence and the freedoms which, several years after it, our forefathers guaranteed, through the constitu- tion, to their posterity. Such an event as the anniversary of your newspaper impresses upon us Once again the fact that, central to these liberties, is freedom of the press." The parley, sponsored by the In- ternational Bureau of Education and the United Nations Educa- tional, Scientific and Cultural Organization, has attracted lead- ing educators from 69 countries. Avidor reported that it has not been possible before now to open a teachers' college fog Arab teachers because there has not been an overall Arab secondary school system from which to draw candidates. Last summer, he said, 130 young Arab men and women took an intensive training course at the end of which they received teaching certificates. It was hoped that many of these 130 would enter a teachers college which was projected, but too few registered and the college never got under way. Many of the spe- cial course graduates were then hired as untrained teachers. The Israel educator proposed that the international conference recommend the establishment of a fund—under UNESCO ad- ministration—to provide educa- tional assistance for underdevel- oped countries. He projected such a fund to provide longterm loans for the construction of schools and for the development of teach- er training programs. The Jews of Burma NEW YORK (WJA)—Of the 2,000 Jews in Burma prior to World War II, only 400 returned after the conclusion of hostilities, having taken refuge abroad or been held in Japanese intern- ment camps. Of the community of 400, over one half, 250, have since emigrated, leaving a small Jewish community of 150 souls. These figures are disclosed in a report to the World Jewish Con- gress Organization Department by the Burma Synagogue Com- mittee, affiliated to the World Jewish Congress. A trust fund provides for the upkeep of the synagogue, and a Hebrew class is conducted by the wife of the Israel Minister to Burma, the report adds.
