Ex-GI Welcomes Mother Sister

CHARLES GOTTLIEB, 24, a former DP recently honorably
discharged from the U. S. Army, is reunited with his mother, Mrs.
o Cyrla Gryncajer, 48, and sister, Fanny, 17, on their arrival. in
New York from Belgium. Their immigration was assisted by
United Hias Service, the Jewish international migration agency.
Young Gottlieb, because he was born in Belgium, was able to
come to the U. S. five years ago, while his mother, a native of
Poland, was compelled to wait five additional years for a visa
under the over-subscribed Polish quota, and her daughter elected
to wait with her. The children were hidden by a gentile family
during the Nazi occupation of Belgium. Their father died at the
hands of the Nazis, and the mother survived a concentration camp.

`MINE BOY'

Powerful South
African Story

Remember the name: Peter
Abrahams. This (Coloured) South
African has just produced an-
other novel about the peoples—
colored and white—in , his native
land. His publisher, Alfred A.
Knopf, has shown wisdom as well
as initiative in issuing Abrahams'
"Mine Boy" in a moderately
priced edition. The novel posses-
ses so much strength that its
merits should result in large
sales, justifying the faith placed
in it by its publisher.
"Mine Boy" is Xuma from the
North who came to work in the
mines. He lands into an environ-
ment of oppression in an atmos-
phere of filth and degradation,
where the colored folks are com-
pelled to sell beer clandestinely,
while the whites are free to have'
their bars.
Xuma falls in love. But the
girl of his choice aspires to the
things the whites have and leaves
him. Another girl, who loves him
and waits for him, finally makes
him happy. In the interim, Xuma
befriends a white man—his im-
mediate boss at the mine—who
sticks by him when he refuses to
go down there again after an
accident until the repairs are
made. --
,This colored-white friendship
is based on an understanding of
the true meaning of freedom,
regardless of a man's color. This
understanding emanates as one
of the great symbols of the very
fine novel, "Mine Boy," which
draws attention to Peter Abra-
hams as a truly great writer.

U.S. Survey Shows
Israel's Economic Road
Still Very Rocky

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Unless
amicable relations between Israel
and the Arab states are achieved,
the economic future of Israel is
"not very encouraging," accord-
ing to an analysis of the Israel
agricultural economy released by
the Foreign Agricultural Service
of the Department of Agricul-
ture.
The report points out that
Israel's economic problems could
best be alleviated if the Arab
position toward *Israel were re-
solved. If this were accomplished,
the report asserts, Israel could
cope with future economic prob-
lems. "M i.l i t a r y expenditures
could be cut drastically, commer-
cial relations could be established
with the traditional neighboring
Arab markets, a reasonably ade-
quate water supply could be ob-
tained," the report says.
In summary, the report states
that while Israel has made "im-
pressive progress" in agricultural
and industrial production, the
population has doubled-since 1948
and the food production per per-
son has only risen 20 percent. It
establishes that Israel has a "very
unbalanced economy and an in-
flation which has not been con-
trolled."
The analysis by the Department
of Agriculture expresses the view
that United States grants-in-aid
and German reparations pay-
ments cannot continue indefinite-
ly at the present level; also that
Israel's second generation will
not hold the devotion and en-
thusiasm of the original idealistic
settlers who were dedicated to
the establishment of an' inde-
pendent Jewish State.
The Department of Agriculture
announced the sale to Israel of
$13 million of surplus agricul-,
tural commodities during the
fiscal year ending June 30, 1955.

Italian Court Sentences
Former Nazi 'In Absentia'

ROME (JTA)—Gottfried •Meir,
former Nazi S.S. officer, was sen-
tenced to life imprisonment in
absentia for killing four Jews in

Italy in 1943. The murders had
been committed at Intra, on Lag()

Maggiore.
The Austrian government has
refused to extradite Herr Meir to
Italy. An Austrian court, which
had tried the ex-Nazi officer on
similar charges had acquitted him
for "lack of. proof."
