He Knew It All Along
In a human interest piece about the late Professor Einstein, the
Israeli newspaper Davar relates a story once told by the famous
artist Herman Struck. •
It was rather early in the morning when Struck spotted Einstein
entering a bus on one of Berlin's main streets. He followed and on
shaking hands with, the great scientist he broke out into a storm
of congratulations. Einstein' seemed bewildered by the sudden out-
burst of felicitation and looked at Struck as at a prankster. By now
Struck too was confused, but after regaining his composure he asked
Einstein whether he hadn't read the morning papers. When. Einstein
said no, Struck excitedly told him that Berlin's entire press was
frontpaging this morning a report that tests conducted at.the Observ-
atory of Los Angeles had confirmed the theory of relativity. Pro-
fessor Einstein looked •momentarily into Struck's eyes and remarked
with subdued smile "I have known this for twenty years."

FALLSBURGH, N. Y. — The
Orthodox Rabbinical Council of
America, a group which is hold-
ing its annual convention here,
Tuesday announced that it has
made formal application to the
Soviet Embassy in Washington
to allow a delegation of rabbis
to visit the Jews of the Soviet
Union.
The announcement was made
by Rabbi David Hollander, presi-
dent, who told the convention
that the Soviet Embassy has
asked for full details on the "na-
ture and purpose" of the visit.
"We are hopefully awaiting an
affirmative response from the
Soviet government," he stated.
Noting that "the forthcoming
meeting of heads of the four
powers holds out a distinct pos-
sibility for lessening of interna-
tional tensions," Rabbi Hollander
stressed that "our request, if
granted, will foster a growing
spirit of -understanding between
East and West which appears to
be emerging on our world hoiiz-
ons."
He added: "We seek only to
visit our co-religionists in order
to re-establish our spiritual ties
which. will enhance and strength-
en the bond between our peo-
ples."
Rabbi Hollander declared that
"granting of our request will
have far-reaching effects not only
for Jews but for a _world eager
to see increasing signs of trust
and friendship among peoples of
the world. We firmly believe that
such acts of sympathetic under-
standing gradually build a firm
foundation on which can be . se-
curely rested a structure of peace
and amity among nations."
The clause in Federal govern-
ment proctirement contracts
which prohibits racial and re-
ligious discrimination in employ-

tracts Committee," James P.

Mitchell, Secretary of Labor,
assured the convention.
The Secretary reminded his
rabbinical audience that social
justice, "which some economic
and political reformers think
they invented" actually has its
roots in the Bible. The Jew, Sec.
Mitchell said, "has always recog-
nized the dignity of labor. The
Jewish sages have always taught
that work was noble and idle-
ness disgraceful. They actually
earned their daily bread by work-
ing as tailors, carpenters, masons
and in similar occupations.
"The Ten Commandments con-
tained one of the first attempts
to prohibit excessive hours of
labor. They not only prohibited
work by the Jew on the Sabbath
but also forbade him from em-
ploying his servant on that day.
_The servant, a fellow human be-
ing, was also entitled to a day
of rest.
"As you knoW' better than I,
justice to the laborer pervades
much of Jewish literature. The
Book of Leviticus requires that
the wages of a hired servant
shall not be retained overnight.
He is entitled to his pay when it
is due. The Prophet Malachi
preaches eloquently against those
who oppress a worker in his
wages."

Sabbath at Moscow
Samuel Reshevsky, the one-time child prodigy;'may never get a
chance to wrest the chess championship from Russia's Botvinnik
and if he does he could conceivably fail, but the class he displayed
in Moscow when he publicly declared Sabbath was a day of rest
stamps him as champion in a field' where the reward is immeasur-
ably greater. `Skill has brought him victory over the world's leading
chess titan. His dignity and his bearing brought honor to his people
and hope to the hundreds of thousands of our faith in Russia who
have forgotten neither Sabbath nor Yom Toy.

laborers to bring numberless
loads 'of earth with which to fill
it. Some of the workmen, seeing
the depth, foolishly said among
themselves, "How is it possible
ever to reach the bottom?" and
abandoned the work.
The more sensible men re-

deep it is? We are paid for our

have work; we will do our duty
faithfully, and the ditch will be
filled in due time."
Let not man say, "Oh, how
bottomless is the Law of God!
It is deeper than the sea. How

can comply with them all?"
