Christian Herald Blasts
Hollywood Bible Stories

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A strong
protest against movie versions of
Bible stories in an article by J.
C. Furnas in the - July issue of
the "Christian Herald," entitled
"Look What Hollywood's Doing
to Your Bible" says that such
treatment "has often bordered
on sacrilege and it has long
been monotonous."
Speaking of Cecil B. DeMille's
Biblical spectacle films, the au-
thor states, "He has at least the
excuse that, presumably with-
out leave, he has repeatedly
travestied God's Word and no-
body has objected. His sporadic
imitators have no excuse what-
soever."
The article, while not advo-
cating censorship, asked wheth-
er it might not be wise for
church members to absent them-
selves from such movies, for
minister to deliver sermons on
such subjects, for church bulle-
tins to carry warning notes and
for objectionable advertising to
be displayed on bulletin boards
as an indication of its distaste-
fulness.
Such action, the author sug-
gests, might indicate to movie
makers "that travesty of the
Bible is not essential to movies
exploiting Hollywood's illiterate
idea of the ancient world."
