Noah, the First
Letter Writer

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright 1955, Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, Inc.)

According to President Ben.
Zvi of Israel, the first man to
write a letter was Noah. He sent
out a dove and got an olive
leaf in reply telling him the
flood was over.
Think what the stamp on that
letter would be worth.
An Israel philatelic journal
has a circulation of more than
10,000. in the United States. Is-
rael stamps are the most popular
export of Israel in the United
States where there are, I am told,
15,000,000 stamp collectors. I
am further informed that soon
.Einstein's face will be on two
stamps—one issued by Israel and
the other by the country from
which he fled. I mean Germany.

The head of the American ex-
press Company, one of the
world's foremost authorities on
tourism, is of the opinion that
Israel can look forward to an
increasing flood of tourists in
the near future. He says Amer-
icans are getting a bit fed up
with Europe and they are now
beginning to spill over into the
Near East.
Israel can offer superior hotel
accommodations for the tourist
along with the history and
sights. Incidentally, work has
just begun on a new hotel, fi-
nanced by Israel Bonds, in the
Judean • Hills • surrounding Jer-
usalem. The cool mountain air
should make this hotel especially
attractive in the summer.

Orthodox Parley Assails
Plan to Ordain Women

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y., (JTA)
—The proposal by some Reform
rabbis to ordain women as
rabbis was termed here "a
blasphemous attempt to trans-
form the rabbinate to a social
service agency." The 'attack
came at the 13th annual con-
ference of the Rabbinical Alli-
ance of America, an organiza-
tion affiliated with the Ortho-
dox rabbinate.
Addressing the delegates,
Rabbi C. U. Lipschitz, national
director of the Rabbinical Alli-
ance, took issue with Dr.
Barnett Brickner, president of
the organization of reform
rabbis, who described women as
having "special spritual and
emotional fitness to be rabbis."
Rabbi Mendel Feldman, presi-
dent of the Rabbinical Alliance;
told the deleg.ates that "the
trend towards the synagogue,
temple and church, in these
trying days, replete with ten-
tions and anxieties, poses a
serious threat of, diluting tradi-
tional Judaism of its rational
elements."
