'Jewish Children's Home
Silvis Down in Newark

NEWARK, N. J., (JTA)—The
Children's Home of the Jewish
Child Care Association has
closed, bringing to an end a ma-
jor phase of child care - which
has been going on for nearly a
century in this area. Decision to
close the home, which has been
in use as a center for resident
treatment of disturbed children,
was taken in March by the board
of trustees because of a lack of
funds.
The gradual change in pur-
pose of the Home from the care
of orphans to the care of dis-
turbed youngsters, it was ex-
plained, brought with it the need
for more highly trained person-
nel. Cost per child for the past
year was about $4,000. That fact,
coupled with the relatively small
number of children involved,
prompted the decision.
Arrangements for the trans-
fer of nine children now at the
Home have been made. Irving
Greenberg, JCCA executive di-
rector, said that there was great
difficulty in prcviding adequate
care for such children and added
that for some of the children in-
volved there is no alternative
treatment to resident care.

Sanders Firm Marks
80th Year in Detroit

Last month marked the 80th
year of service in Detroit of the
Fred Sanders Co., which has
grown from a small but popular
soda fountain to a chain now
operating 35 stores and in 25
markets in the -metropolitan De-
troit area.
The Sanders firm is now run
by Fred W. Sanders, grandson
of Frederick Sanders, who open-
ed his first store on June 17,
1875, at 166 Woodward, at the I
corner of State St.
Learning the trade from his
baker-father who ran a shop in
Peru, Ill., Frederick Sanders
worked his way back to Ger-
many, the land of his birth, tol
study confections and catering
at Karlsruhe.
He went into business for him-
self at Frankfort, with the help
of his wife, Rosa, then returned
to America, working in Philadel-
phia and beginning his awn bus-
iness in Chicago, which was rav-
aged by the fire,
Sanders is given credit for in-
venting, among other confec-
tions, the ice cream soda, The
story goes that one hot summer
day the sweet cream for the
popular sweet' cream soda sour-
ed, and Sanders substituted ice
cream for the sweet cream. This
delighted his customers and
made the beverage a permanent
fixture.

Strike Spreads Among
Israel Civil Servants

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Prem- I
ier Moshe Sharett appealed to
striking doctors, Hebrew Univer-
.sity teachers and court officials
to "have patience" and call off k
their strikes and slowdowns for
higher wages, even as the
strikes spread and the academie
staff of the Weizmann Institute
of Science at Rehovoth walked
out.
Mr. Sharett's appeal for pa-
tience until a Parliamentary
committee brings in proposals
for a new civil servants wage
schedule to be put into effect
in August, came after several
parties urged the government to
take immediate steps to avert
closing down of the national
health services.
The physicians' slowdown af-
fected more hospitals and clin-
ics, with the Tel Aviv municipal
hospitA) rastricting its out-
patient service/ ,oici admitting

no new clinic patients.
