Ahavas Achim Youth Meet
To Plan Summer Program

The first offit'ial board meet-
ing of the Ahavas Achim Youth
Group was held last evening, at
the synagogue, where plans were
made for two social events dur-
ing the summer months.

New members of the board sel-
ected by president Janet Waser-
man include Stephen Zorn,
Richard Snyder, Diane Gold-
.. farb, Terri Faxstein, Elliot Burns,
Michael Krasnik, Faygabeth At-
las, Margie Schwartzberg, Robert
Ancell and Maxine Drexler.
Adult advisors are Jules Suberoff,
Mrs. Irwin Leviant and Mrs.
Richard Burns.

Cantor Ackerman of Israel
To Chant at Beth Abraham

'• Cantor Shabsai Ackerman,
leading cantor of the Tel Aviv
Synagogue, in Israel, will chant
the services this sabbath at
Cong. Beth Abraham, Linwood
at Fullerton.
Services will be held at 7:30
p.m., today, and at 8:30 a.m.,
Saturday. Rabbi Israel I. Hal-
pern will review the Torah por-
tion "Chukas-Balak."
The public is invited to attend.

Honor Israel Rabbi
On Scholarly Mission

Rabbis, presidents of local
congregations and representa-
tives of many organizations in
the community were present last
Saturday night at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Isidore Sosnick to
honor Rabbi Isaac Weinstein,
who is presently visiting here
from Israel. --
Rabbi Weinstein is here to
speak in behalf of Otzar Hapo-
skim, collecting all laws and
judgments amassed through the
ages and arranging them in ac-
cordance with and in order of
the Shulchan Aruch.
Otzar Haposkim, Rabbi Wein-
stein explained. is not limited to
practicing rabbis, but will serve
as a guide as well for all rab-
binic scholars desirous of. delv-
ing into Talmudic -problems. • •
The Otzar Haposkim will cover
60 volumes, and those present
agreed to. raise enough' funds to
cover printing and publishing
one of the works.
Participating in the program
were Rabbis Isaac Stollman,
Chaim Weingarten, of London,
England, Lein. Bakst and Max
J. Wohlgelernter. Rabbi Wein-
stein is a cousin of the Sosnick
family and will remain at their
home during his stay here.

Awards of $500, $300 and $200
will be given to winners of a 1956
essay contest on modern Jewish
history and contemporay Jewish
affairs, sponsored by the World
Jewish Congress' cultural de-
partment, in memory of Dr. Rob-
ert S. Marcus, late political di-
rector of Congress.
The essays may be written in
English, Yiddish or Hebrew, and
may be as lbng as 15,000 words.
There are no eligibility restric-
tions. Subjects must deal with
the political, economic, social or
cultural aspects of Jewish life
since the 19th century.
Entries should be submitted in
two typewritten copies anony-
mously, with the author's name
and address enclosed in a sealed
envelope to be attached. They
muse' be sent by March 1, 1956,
to the Cultural Department,
World Jewish Congress, 15 E.

Oak-Woods Young Israel
Sets Summer Schedule

Young Israel Center of Oak-
Woods, Coolidge and Allen Rcls.,
Oak Park, will continue regular
sabbath services and weekday
services throughout the summer
months.
Evening services "today begin
at 7:45 p.m., and'Saturday serv-
ices start at 9 a.m. The Bar Mitz-
vah of Louis Small will be ob-

Announcement was made of
the six-week summer sessions, to
be held at Yeshivah, June 27 to
Aug. 5, combining study of He-
brew with a day camp program.
An additional school bus has
been purchased to accommodate
the heavy enrollment.
Following the installation,
dinner guests attended gradua-
tion exercises of the school held
in Young Israel Center. There
were 26 elementary School di-
plomas and eight intermediate
certificates awarded by Rabbi
Moses Fischer, honorary chair-
man of. the board of education.
and Rabbi Joseph Elias, princi-
pal.
Valedictorians were Robert
Levi,' Benjamin Carlebach and
Shirley Isbee. Cantor Hyman J.
Adler, accompanied by Mrs. Shir-
ley Sklash, presented the musi-
cal portion of the program.

Classes of the Beth Shalom
Religious 'School, which meets at
the Andrew Jackson School, in
Oak Park, were recently coin-
pleted with an assembly at
which 48 of the 200 students
were recognized for outstanding
scholarship.
Leon Lucas, an associate pro-
fessor at Wayne University, di-
rects the school, which is open
to boys and girls between four
and twelve. Courses taught in-
clude history, Hebrew, ceremo-
nies and customs and music. A
children's choir was formed this
year.
Registration has begun for the
fall term, and will continue
throughout the summer months.
