Labor Zionists Hold Cornerstone
Ceremonies. for New Cultural Center
SIDNEY SHEVITZ, immediate past president of the Jewish
Community Council, and an active Member of the Labor Zionist
Movement in Detroit, is shown setting in place one of the (bricks
that make up the cornerstone for the new Labor Zionist - Institute,
Schaefer and Seven Mile Rd. The program, -which attracted lead-
ers and _friends of Detroit LZOA, Marked the cornerstone laying
of the new cultural center of the organiiatfon. Several contribu-
tions were received at the ceremonies which will makepossible the
rapid rise of the structure.
Tree Planting, Continues in Will
Trees still can be planted in
the Williams-Hart Forest in Is-
rael, according to an announce-
ment by Max Osnos, who with
the Hon: Prentis M. Brown is
co-chairman of the Forest being
developed locally by the Detroit
Council of the Jewish National
Fund,
The Forest is being undertak-
en to honor Gov. G. 'Mennen
Williams and Lt. Gov. Philip A.
Hart: Names of all people con-
tributing trees to the project
will be included in a book which
will become a permanent part
of the scroll officially presented
.

dens of 1,000 trees, and will be
sent, autographed by Gov. Wil-
liams and Lt. Gov. Hart, to all
contributors.

A distinguished audience of
more than 350, representing all
faiths, on June 22 paid: high
honors to Dr. Robert H. Ha,Skell,
at a dinner at the Wayne Cciun-
ty Training School, Northville,
on the eve of his retirement as
medical superintendent of the
school, after serving in that
position since 1926.
Dr. Ralph Rabinovich, director
of children's services for the
University of Michigan Neuro-
psychiatric Institute, who has
worked closely with Dr. Haskell
in recent years, delivered the
principal address of the evening.
He described the manner in
which Dr. Haskell had pioneered
in the field of helping salvage
mentally-handicapped youth s,
and reviewed some of the im-

lead a Detroit 'delegation to Is-
rael for the opening on Aug. 7
of Bar-Ilan University.
The statement, released this
week by Abraham Nusbaum,
chairman of the local commit-
tee for Bar Ilan University; ad-
vised that other Detroiters in
the delegation will be Rabbi
Samuel H. Prero, Rabbi Max J.
Wohlgelernter, Rabbi H a y i m
Donin, Sol G. Chinitz and Zvi
Tomkiewicz.
Max Stollman is national
chairman Of the building com-
mittee for the university. His
brother, Phillip, who is Detroit
Mizrachi president and chair-
man of the local Bond commit-
tee, is also a trustee of the new
university.,
Bar-Ilan University, built at
Ramat Gan, is-sponsored by the
Mizrachi Organization of
America, and is regarded as - a
cultural link between the Jew ,-
ries of Israel and America.
Patterned: after education
systems in this country, Bar-
Ilan also will be devoted to
teachings of ,Judaism. P r o f.
Pinkhos Churgin, world re-
nowned : scholar and echicator, is
president of the new school.
Visitors froth every center of
Jewish life in the world will join
local delegates at the Univer-
sity's opening. Academic work
wIll begin with the fall semes-
ter, and 150 applications are
now being screened from the-
U.S., Canada and Israel.
The campus, located between
Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan, pres-
ently consists of _ eight buildings.
Expansion is planned, particu-
larly in the arts and sciences, at
a later date.
