UN's 10th Anniversary Celebration
Shows No, Sign of Arab Cooperation

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA)-The
tenth anniversary of the United
Nations, celebrated here last
week in the city where it first
began, was the focus of the
hopes of Jewish groups through-
out the world.
They expressed the wish that
peace in the Middle East and
the adoption of the Convention
on Human Rights, within the
broader framework of universal
peace. might speedily come to
pass:
Nor was it a matter of hope

alone, since their prayers, too,
were directed toward that
end, with synagogues here
joining neighboring churches
in special services to mark the
commemorative session of the
world body.

A plea for peace in the Middle
East based on mutual respect
between Israel and the Arab
states, made by Ambassador
Abba Eban, was shunted aside,
as Arab leaders conducted a
vindictive attack at the anni-
versary celebration.
In a long address replete with
philosophical phraseology, Dr.
Charles Malik of Lebanon ac-
cused the United Nations of
both "action" and "inaction" in
connection with the "eternal"
problems besetting the Middle I
East.
Without once mentioning Is-
rael, Dr. Malik told the United
Nations representatives here
that there has been "no respite"
from the Middle East problems
in the United Nations and that
there will be no respite because
those problems are "essential."

in the Middle East. We hope
that the United Nations will
be able to resolve that situa-
tion in the coming decade."

Moussa Al-Shabandar, dele-
gate of Iraq, said: "For us Arabs
there were some bitter moments
in the proceedings of the United
Nations during the last 10 years.
The tragedy of Palestine has cut
deep into the heart of every
Arab. And the misery of nearly
1,000,000 Arab refugees cannot
be forgotten. Nor can we forget
the sad situation in North
Africa."
Khalid el-Azm, Foreign Min-
ister of Syria, tried bluntly to
inject anti-Israel propaganda
when he said in his address that
"Zionism" was "an offshot of
imperialism."
He also said "in one instance,
that of Palestine, the United
Nations had to go off the course
of the Charter, under the pres-
sure of some powers, to an ab-
normal and unprecedented
course."
Dr. Van Kleff ens actually
gavelled el-Azm when be began
to call for the liberation of the
peoples of North Africa. He
warned the Syrian statesman
that he could not raise specific
political disputes at the celebra-
tion meeting. After appearing
confused. el-Azm continued, but
apparently omitted some of his
speech.

The estate is mostly comprised
of the Blue Haven Lodge, a pop-
ular resort hotel near Amherst-
burg where Mr. Goldman had
been living after leaving Detroit
a number of years ago.
The Lodge is made up of 12
apartment unit s, a ,spacious
home and a garage with apart-
ment above. Nate Goldstick, De-
troit's Assistant Corporation
Counsel, and Lester Hamilton,
of Amherstburg, both personal
friends of Mr. Goldman, were
the executors.
A metal dealer in Detroit, Mr.
Goldman in his youth was a
member of the Tri-Square Club
and one of "Fred Butzel's boys
at the old Hannah Schloss Build-
ing," says Goldstick.
His older brother, the late
Alex Goldman, was a noted bas-
ketball coach at the Hannah
Schloss Building. .
According to the terms of the
will, the resort must be used for
charitable purposes, such as a
children's camp, orphanage, old
people's home or hospital. Mar-
vin Ordower, president of Wind-
sor Bnai Brith, disclosed no im-
mediate plans for the use of the
resort.
