Wolf and Judith Lewin-Epstein,
Zionist pioneers who belonged
to the BILU movement and who
were among the organizers of
the famous Rehovoth settlement'
in the Holy Land—seat of the
Weizmann Institute and the
home of the late President of
Israel—Mrs. Hershman carried
on the family traditions in Zion-
ism and in Jewish cultural
movements.
Like her mother, Judith Lewin-
Epstein, who was co-founder of
National Hadassah with the late
Miss Henrietta Szold and Mrs.
Solomon Schechter, Mrs. Hersh-
man was co-founder of Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah which she
served as one of the early presi-
dents.
Mrs. Hershman played a lead-
ing role also in the Sisterhood
of Shaarey Zedek, in the Worn-

age of 3 and remained there
until she was 14. She was a good
Hebraist, knew the Jewish clas-
sics as well as world literature
and inherited from her mother,
who was a noted music lover, an
understanding of the arts.
Her father, in addition to his
BILU activities and to founding
Rehovoth, was instrumental in
interesting the late Baron Ed-

cellars in Rishon LeZion, Israel.
The late Elias Lewin-Epstein
was treasurer of the Provisional
Zionist Executive Committee in
this country, during World War

Louis D. Brandeis was chairman
of that committee.

Only three weeks before her
death, while she still was in
Sinai Hospital, Mrs. • Hershman
was especially concerned with
the publishing of her father's
remaining memoirs.
On the occasion of the cele-
bration of the 50th anniversary
of the death of Dr. Theodor
Herzl, founder of the modern
political Zionist movement, Mrs.
Hershman recalled her conver-
sations with Dr. Herzl, when he
was a guest for dinner at her
parent's home in Rehovoth in
1899—the year Dr., Herzl met
with Kaiser Wilhelm of Ger-
many in Palestine. Although she
was then a very young child, the
memory of that meeting remain-
ed vividly with her.

( The Loss of a
Great Lady

CARSON
BUICK
13900

Detroit Jewry is bereaved
of a great lady in the death of
Miriam Lewin-Epstein Hersh-
man.
Her contributions to our
community have been note-
worthy.
As a co-founder of Detroit
Hadassah, her name lives in-
delibly in the historyAof De-
troit Jewry.
She has inspired many of
our people in behalf of the
Zionist cause. She literally
was born into the great move-
ment of Jewish liberation un-
der the roof of parents who
pioneered in Palestine's up-
building and in the creation
of roots for present-day Is-
rael.
Mrs. Hershman inherited
from her mother, who was a
co-founder of national Hadas-
sah, a love for the arts. She
shared with her distinguished
husband and her parents a
devotion for Jewish and
wordly cultural values, for
Eretz Israel, for her faith and
her country.
She was blessed with a re-
markable memory and in her
encyclopedic mind were
stored facts and figures, his-
torical/data and information
about noted personalities —
and many, seeking informa-
tion, often turned to her for
prompt guidance in fact-
gathering.
Mrs. Abraham M. Hersh-
man was a truly great lady.
An appreciative community
mourns her loss. Blessed be
her memory.
