Helped Zionists

° The phenomenal career of
David Lawrence. Washington
correspondent, editor, publisher,
promoter of various news serv-
ices and periodicals, is described
in a full-size portrait by Edgar
Kemler in a recent number of
the "Nation."
It is, of course, a glowing suc-
cess story, for Lawrence has
amassed a fortune from his vari-
ous enterprises, besides gaining
a national reputation.
There have
been failures as
well as sucesses
in the course of
his career, and
the . U.S. Daily
ran for over six
years at a huge
loSs, but this
was covered by
a list of wealthy
patrons of the
enterprise.

Today, the "U.S. News and
World Report" and all his other
enterprises, including news
services and syndicated columns
are flourishing and most profit-
able.
Lawrence is, of course, one of
our brethren and perhaps now
a mere distant relation, for in
the course of his remarkable
career he has _gone through a
complete transformation. And
the friend and supporter of
Woodrow Wilson and Franklin
D. Roosevelt has in recent years
become the supporter of "dy-
namic conservatism," "reaction-
ary progress" or whatever it may
be called. Anyway, he _has be-
come a defender and apologist
not only of the Hon. Joseph R.
McCarthy but of McCarthyism
itself, which is a little worse
than the Senator.
There were, however, other
times which are no longer re-
membered and this may only
be known to a few of the elder
observers of public affairs.
In 1922, the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America made a special
effort to gain the support of our
Government. for Zionism and a
Jewish Palestine. A special com-
mittee went to Washington to
interest - members of the . U.S.
Congress in the Zionist cause.
The committee was - headed by
Abraham Goldberg and it in-
cluded Louis Robison, Herman
Ronheim, Peter Sweitzer and
one or two other executive
members of . the organization.
The committee was received
at the White House by President
Warren G. Harding and this was
the first step in stimulating offi-
cial sympathy with Zionism.
Through the intervention of a
close relation of Mr. Lawrence,
who was then living in Wash-
ington, Goldberg and the other
members of the committee held
a conference with the noted cor-
respondent. He was friendly and
expressed warm interest. He was
helpful in making contact with
important members of both the
Senate and the House of ,Repre-
sentatives.
The Res9lution of the U.S.
Congress in favor of the nation-
al Jewish .homeland, adopted on
September 22, 1922, is now a
matter of history.
David Lawrence had some part
in this achievement, and the
ever - remembering recording
angel will surely enter at least
one mark of merit in the final
reckoning of his life as a 'Jew.
