RILES KLEIN Graduating Couple a t Michigan Overcome Husband's Polio Attack The ability of a young couple to overcome serious obstacles will be. recognized Saturday, when Dr. and Mrs. Richard M. Kommel graduate from the University of Michigan. Mrs. Kommel will receive the degree of Master of Arts in Rhetoric, and her husband his Only a year and a half ago Dr. Kommel was stricken with bulbar polio, while studying at Michigan and supplementing his income by working as a nurse in the University Hospital. For some time thereafter he went to classes and made his ward rounds in a wheel chair. But his recovery is now com- plete. The Kommels graduated to- gether from Wayne University in June, 1950, receiving their B.A. degrees. Mrs. K o m m el taught in the Detroit public schools until the arrival of a son in June 1951. She then taught here for an- other year, but with the move to Ann Arbor in 1952, she trans- ferred to a teaching position in that city. She began her 'studies at the University of Michigan graduate schOol in the evenings and during summer. sessions. Dr. and Mrs. Kommel recently moved to -their new home at 13134 Talbot in Huntington Woods and are awaiting the ar- rival of a second child in Octo- ber.
