Warmth and Hearty Emotion in
Emma Schaver's New Recordings

Like her previous recordings of
songs she had gathered in dis-
placed persons camps, Emma
Schaver's new album, "From
the Heart of a People," is a col-
lection full of beauty, sincere
emotion and genuine charm. All
these qualities are the result of
the hearty themes and the
source of the eminent singer's
inspiration: the heart she has
has put into her efforts.
Prepared in Israel, with ac-
companiment by the Kol Israel
orchestra, under the direction of
the eminent composer and di-
rector ; Mark Lavry, Mrs. Schav-
er's latest long-playing record
was produced in this country by
Mercury Records. It goes on sale
this week.
The Detroit soprano's rich and
sweet-toned voice leaves a deep
impression in all of the 11 songs
incorporated in this recording.
As in all her work, there is evi-
dent in this fine creation Mrs.
Schaver's deep understanding of
Jewish life and Jewish feelings.
She knows the languages in
which she sings — Hebrew and
Yiddish—and that distinguishes
her among all who may have
chosen Jewish themes for their
repertoires.
Mrs. Sehaver is acquainted
with Jewish history and with the
European background of Jewish
life. She understands the habits
and the traditions that have

emanated from the shtetel. She
has visited Israel and under-
stands the Israelis. She knows
the refugees among whom she
worked in the displaced per-
sons camps. This understand-
ing and knowledge is reflected in
the soulful tunes that are heard
in the record "From the Heart
of a People."
"Kinneret," one of the songs
in this collection, which has
been heard by many audiences
in many cities where the Detroit
soprano has made appearances,
will thrill her listeners again
and again. It can not tire either
audience or individual. The sel-
ection from "The Song of Songs"
is inspiring.
"Nigun," "Tsvei Vaise Tauben,"
"Drei Yingelech - and "Raisele"
add to the fascination of Mrs.
Schaver's songs. They are • com-
binations of songs of hope, of
the unquenchable fountain of
folklore gathered from Hassidic
sources, children's tunes and
nostalgic recollections of the life
of our people in the shtetlach .
of the past.
Then there are the songs of
the ghetto: Mrs. Schaver's now
famed rendition of "Ani Maam-
in," her equally well known "Es
Brennt," the deeply moving .
"M arch of Death," which re-
minds the hear e r s of the
tragedy of the six million who
were martyred by the Nazis, and
"Sleep My Child," a deeply-
moving lullaby to a - child or-
phaned by Auschwitz:
This record revives memories,
arouses hopes, challenges Jews
to action against the repetition
of barbarities, calls for loyalty to
Israel. It is a splendid work and
the demand for it should top
the recording sales.
