Senate Committee Votes Aid to Israel;
U. S. Hopes to Push Jordan River Project

WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
Senate Foreign Relations Corn-
mittee has approved by 13 to
two a $3,408,000 foreign aid bill
that included an estimated $30,-
000.000 in economic assistance
for Israel in the fiscal year 1956.
The measure contained funds
to continue assistance for an-
other year. Chairman Walter F.
George, Georgia Democrat, said
the committee voted the same
amount of new money as asked
by the President plus reauthori-
zation of certain types of mili-
tary aid for Europe.
Push Johnston Plan
With the. anticipated depar-
ture of Ambassador Eric John-

countries to resume his negotia-
tions on the projected regional
water development plan, the
Foreign Operations Administra-
tion emphasized that the United
States Government is especially
interested in this plan because
it may help in the resettlement
of Arab refugees from Palestine
and ease the conflict between
Israel and the Arab countries.
FOA, states that "nearly 70,000
Arab refugees now in the Gaza
area of Egypt may be rehabili-
tated by developing, through
supplies o f water drawn from
the River Nile, the agricultural
potential of an area east of the
Suez Canal." The statement em-
phasized that "of special inter-
est to the U. S. is the yet un-
settled conflict over Palestine
and the resettlement of Arab
refugees," and added: "Our pos-
sible key to the solution' of the
problem is the development of
the Jordan River."
Will Aid Refugees
"A Jordan River arrangement,"
said the FOA, "would enable the
government of Israel to proceed
