Veterans Groups, Congregations
Join in Memorial Day Services

Members of the Jewish War
Veterans and American Legion
will join mourners in conduct-
ing services for our country's
war dead at nearly every ceme-
tery in the community.
The Department of Michigan
JWV will hold Memorial Day
services at 10:45 a.m., Sunday, at
Machpelah Cemetery, Woodward
at 8 1,, Mile Rd. Individual posts
will hold. graveside services for
comrades who have fallen, sev-
eral of whom after which De-
troit units have been named.
Services are planned at Clover
Hill Park Cemetery at 11 'a.m.,
Monday, May 30, in which
Sholom Post, JWV, will partici-
pate. Rabbi Morris Adler will
deliver the principal address.
Rabbi Milton Arm and Cantor
Jacob H. Sonenklar and choir,
directed by Dan Frohman, will
officiate. Other participants in
the program will be Ralph
Bernstein, past commander, and
Leo M. Panzer, commander of
Sholom Post, and Seymour J.
Frank, chairman of the board of
trustees.

JWV Convention

Slated June 3-5

The annual encampment of
the Department of Michigan,
Jewish War Veterans will be
held here June 3 to 5, it was
smounced this week by Law-
rence Gubow and Mrs. Bernard
Hoffman, co-chairmen.
A highlight of the convention
will be a luncheon for Joseph
F. Barr, national JWV com-
mander at 12 noon, June 3, in
the English Room of the Shera-
ton Cadillac Hotel.
Commander Barr is expected
to relate the role of the organi-
zation in preserving the faith
and ideals of democracy and to
outline JWV's stand on many
legislative acts now pending in
Congress.
Temple Israel will be host to
JWV members at sabbath serv-
ices at 8:30 p.m., that evening:
An oneg shabbat will follow.
Highlighting Saturday's acti-
vities will be the presentation
of two scholarships to daughters
of veterans, states A. Albert
Sugar, chairman. Recorder's
Court Judge W. McKay Skill-
man, who is a member of the
scholarship committee, w i 11
make the presentations.
On Saturday evening, JWV
members and their friends will
attend an all-star Pan-Ameri:-
can Revue, in the Memorial
Home, which will .star Boni and
Marlyn, a Latin American dance
team; Jose Ramon, singer; the
Debs Chorus and Danny Chase
master of ceremonies. Eddie
Lopez and his orchestra will
play music for dancing, an-
nounces Bernard Hoffman, en-
tertainment chairman.
Business sessions, together
with memorial services for serv-
icemen who have died in the
service of their country, will be
held in the Memorial Home.
Election of officers also will be
included.
The encampment will con-
clude Sunday night with a ban-
quet honoring outgoing com-
mander Henny Littman and
outgoing president Mrs. A. Al-
bert Sugar.

Win Hopwood Auxirds

Two University of Michigan
students were recently named
winners in two divisions of the
Avery Hopwood literary award
program of the university.
Rosalee J. Mandell, a senior
and English major, of 20051
Freeland, won a $300 prize in
creative writing for her collec-
tion of eight short stories.
Richard Braun, son of Mrs.
Max Braun, of 2507 Edison, was
I a winner in the poetry division.

Menorah Chapel May
Se,ek New. Location

At the last board meeting of
!Menorah Chapel it was decided
to explore the possibilities of
expansion for Menorah Chapel
in the northwest area. A com-
mittee was selected to seek the
site for the new location.
A draft for the new structure
is to be presented to the next
board meeting for approval.
A discussion took place on the
need for public education on as-
pects of shiva observance.
Menorah Chapel will provide
information on planting trees in
JNF forests and ‘memorializa-
tion \through communal institu-
tions.
