Emanu-EI Sisterhood To Conclude Season Old World Ceremony to Mark Torah Presentation Sunday New stories of the spirit of Israel's citizens are always re- freshing, .and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Laib, of 850 Whitmore, who returned earlier this month from a three-month cruise to Europe and Israel have a good many tales to tell. The Laths were in Israel at the time of the Purim celebration, the first in that country in 20 years. A program in Tel Aviv blocked the regular approach from Haifa to Jerusalem. A couple who the Laibs were with, however, were citizens of Israel, and knew another road. This, too, was blocked, and guarded by a policeman. After several minutes of arguing, the policeman, learning of tourists in the party finally let them through. Afterward, the Israeli said that before the new state was declared, such a verbal encoun- ter with a policeman would have been futile, and "he probably would have spat in my eye." The Laibs were impressed with the-practice of democracy in the Jewish state. Mrs. Laib said that during their stay in Tel Aviv, people were dancing in the streets to the accompani- ment of loud speakers. The poor and the rich mingled together, and nothing seemed to matter except that it was Purim and all were enjoying themselves.
