Telegrams to newsmen from
the anti - Zionist Atheric an
Council for Judaism, announc-
ing an urgent press conferenCe
at New York's Savoy Plaia
Hotel, resulted in the appear-
ande of only five reporters.
Clarence L. Coleman, Jr., new- -
ly - elected president of the
Council; and Leasing J. Rosen-
wald, on hand to greet them,
met with a - number of crit,
ical, questions. The N.Y. Times.
reporter appeared disturbed over
Coleman's .claim that "Zionist
partisans and American politi-
cians haVe given the erroneous
impression that the government
of the U.S. does not desire a
secure and stable. Israel."
When he was asked to name
names, the Council president
appeared hesitant, but then re-
ferred to recent statements by
Congressman.Geller and Dr.
Neuman.
When one reporter indicated -
that "Judaism without the Love
of Zion adds up to paganism
and that the , whole theme of
the Bible revolves around Is-
rael's eventual return to the
ancient . homeland,". Rosenwald
could only say that presently
he is supporting a hospital in
Israel and that the Council is
now formulating plans to aid
certain Israelis through a new
fund Mined at helping needy in
various parts of the word.
Asked how he getS along with
his brother, William Rosenwald,
who heads the UJA, he stated
that political views had in no
way interfered with their close
family status. Thui, while one
brother was attending an anti-
Zionist meeting, William, at an-
other Independence Day session,
made this appeal:
"Israel must make further
Strides as she- enters her eighth
year, and must look to generous
America for support of the
UJA to. produce a :large - Part of
the 'funds needed to speed both
the new state's economic devel-
opment and the absorption of
the continuing flow of Jewish
families from lands of oppres-
'sion and danger."
