PATWA Program in Israel Outlined
To Students in Michigan Colleges
Yehuda Levine, director of the
rnidwest office of Professional
and Technical Workers Aliyah
(PATWA), outlined the need for
professional and technical men
and women in Israel in a series
of addresses before students in
Michigan universities.
Tuesday evening, Mr. Levine,
who was accompanied by his
wife, Tovah, addressed a gather-
ing of Wayne
University stu-
dents. They
spoke also be-
fore the Pioneer;.

groups at West-
e r n Michigan L. Levine
College, Kalamazoo; Mich-
igan State University, Lan-
sing; and University of Michi-
gan, Ann Arbor.
The PATWA directors em-
phasized in their talks the value
to Israel of participation in her
upbuilding by Americans train-
ed in technical skills. They
stated, however, that Israel can
gain from such participation
only when Americans complete
their studies in this country
and gain experience in their
fields.
They were emphatic in their
talks in pointing to the diffi-
culties one encounters in Is-
rael, so that no one should be
disillusioned when arriving in
Israel to help in the state's re-
construction.
Mrs. Tovah. Levine participat-
ed in the programs by answer-
ing duestion4 ,'put to them by
the audience. Their lectures
were illustrated by slides.
Mr. and Mrs. Levine pointed
out that Jewish students from
midwestern states who went to
Israel with the aid of PATWA
outnumbered eastern students
three to one. They stated tb,at
anyone interested in going to
Israel no longer has to knock
on unfamiliar doors because
PATWA is prepared to survey
the field and assist professionals
in their settlement in Israel.
Mrs. Levine formerly was di-
rector of the Jewish Agency
hostel in Tel Aviv.

Educators Mourn
Comay's Death
Only a week ago there was
great joy in the Comay house-
hold at 18622 Hubbell. The Co-
mays had just moved into 'their
new home, and they were cele-
brating the engagement of their
daughter, Channah.
In stark contrast, this week,
sadness prevails, due to an acci-
dent on April 23 which claimed
Mr. Comay's life.
Joseph Comay, a leading edu-
cator in Detroit, was also a win-
dow washer, and it was at this
hazardous occupation that he
lost his life when he fell from
the fifth floor of a downtown
building.
Coming from a renowned rab-
binical family in Mir — his
father was the Mirer Rosh
Yashivah—Mr. Comay, in 1911,
was a founder of the Yiddish
schools in Toronto.
He came to Detroit in 1915,
first as a teacher at the I. L.
Peretz School, then at the Work-
men's Circle School. When Sho-
len]. Aleichem Institute was
formed, he became its first
teacher.
Mr. Comay loved Yiddish, and
was a founder and first teacher
of the Yiddish Mittelshul. The
last 12 years of his life he de-
voted to the study of the Bible,
lecturing frequently at the Mid-
rasha and Sholem Aleichem In-
stitute.
During the depression years,
his teaching salary was not
enough to provide for his family
and he began window washing.
Once before he had had a fall,
which broke both his legs.
Children of t h e Mittelshul
were grief-stricken when they
heard the news of his death.
His accidental passing also is
being mourned in educational
circles in the city.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie;
two sons, Amos of Pittsburgh;
and Eli of Montreal; and his
daaighter Channah of New
York. Services were held at Me-
norah Funeral Chapel, on Puri-
tan.
In Memoriam
In loving memory of our dear
father, Nathaniel Forbes, who
passed away on May 1, 1949 (two
days in Iyar).
Sadly missed by his son, Sid-
ney, daughter, Elaine, and fam-
ily.
