in the past. Under his leader-
ship, Beth Abraham has re-
mained Orthodox, and he
plans to continue to advise
his congregants as long as he
is able. In these plans he is
assisted by his associate, Rab-
bi Israel I. Halpern.

RABBI JOSEPH THUMIM
planned by Cong. Beth Abra-
ham in celebration of almost a
half century of service to the
synagogue.
The banquet, to be held at
6:30 p.m., Sunday, at Rainbow
Terrace, is part of a week end
of festivities planned to cele-
brate the cornerstone laying for
the new Beth Abraham Syna-
gogue and Center, now under
construction at W. Seven Mile
and Greenlawn.
Rabbi Thumim, whose fam-
ily has boasted an unbroken
chain of rabbis for 20 genera-
tions, was dedicated for his call-
ing almost at the time of his
birth in Galicia, in Austria. He
attained fame as a profound
scholar, like many of his pre-
deceisors in Europe.

An ardent Zionist all his
life, Rabbi Thumim recalls a
meeting in 1895 with Theodor
Herzl, the father of modern
Zionism, hi which Herzl urged
him to use all his influence
to further the cause.

Since most of his colleagues
feared Zionism as a radical
movement. Rabbi Thumim was
slowed in his efforts to aid the
advent of a Jewish homeland.
It was partly in protest against
the non-acceptance of Zionism
that Rabbi Thumim left Europe
for this country.
Behind every man's success
there is said to be the power of
a woman. In Rabbi Thumim's
story, his wife, who came from
a wealthy banking family, en-
couraged her husband in his
support of traditional Ortho-
doxy.
She became hostess to many
gatherings of visiting rabbis and
cantors or members of Rabbi
Thumim's congregation. She,
too, found time to raise a fam-
ily of nine children, all of whom
were raised in traditional Ju-
daism.
For years he has been presi-
dent of the Union of Orthodox
Rabbis in Detroit. Rabbi Thu-
mim and his close friend, the
late Rabbi Judah Levin, were
founders of the society. He also
is the author of several books
and a contributor to many Jew-
ish periodicals.
The first building in which
Rabbi Thumim conducted serv-
ices has long since disappeared,
and two other buildings have
seen lengthy service in the com-
munity.
