Arab League states demanded that as a minimum gesture, the conference should recommend implementation of the United Nations resolution .. "Like an apparition from the past, the former Grand Mufti stalked into the secre- tariat while the Arab delegates were denouncing his old foes. He could not enter the conference_ chamber, since he was not a delegate, but was led to a small adjoining room. He was wearing a red fez swathed in a white • turban, black robes, and carried a black brief case. "He told reporters he would ask a chance to be heard.. 'I've come here to fight my battle,' he said, grinning. "The Arab delegates were not too enthusiastic over his sudden appearance. Since he took up exile in Cairo in 1946, the former Grand Mufti has had little political influ- ence in Arab affairs. Jordanians in particular dislike him, for he bitterly opposed their incorporation of the west bank of. the Jordan River." Men and women in all walks of life, from many states in the Union, including promi- nent Government officials, joined in extending their felicitations to Medinat Israel on having attained high international status after hurdling many obstacles dur- ing seven difficult and trying years. Occurring at a time when Israel's enemies again are "ganging up" in an effort to destroy her, under the leadership of her arch enemy, the Nazi collaborator and former Mufti of Jerusalem, -Haj Amin el Husseini, Tuesday's event — the annual dinner of the inter-faith American-Israel Society—served to encourage Israel and her friends in the struggle for the security of this young state, the battler for democracy in that entire area. A very touching part of the program was the message delivered to the gath- ering, from Jerusalem, by Michigan's dy,namic Governor, G. Mennen Williams. Speaking from the Holy City at the very dawn of Israel's Independence lay — on Wednesday morning, April 27, the fifth day of Iyar — his address was heard - by the gathering here at the Willard at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. Gov. Williams' telephonic address was one of a group of talks by members of a delegation from the American-Israel Society now in Israel. It began with a pre- sentation by Walter Phillips, of Philadelphia, of a reproduction of the Liberty. Bell to Israel in behalf of the - city of Philadelphia, and with an announcement that Israel is returning the gesture by sending a unique Shofar to the people of Philadelphia. Herman Wouk, who gained world-wide fame because of his best 'seller, "The' Caine Mutiny," arriving in Israel only nine hours earlier, was able to relate thrill- ing experiences becatise he was met at Lydda Airport by his 90-year-old grand- father, a former New York rabbi, and by the numerical display of "7" visible everywhere during Israel's celebration. . Gov. Williams welcomed the "clasping of hands in friendship by two democ- • ies."
