'Her Children Call Her
Blessed : Portrait of
Mother' Off the Press
The unique role of the mother
and the idea of motherhood in
the world of • the Jew is the
theme of a new book pub-
lished recently-"Her Children
Call Her Blessed: A Portrait of
the Jewish Mother" (Stephen
Daye Press). Compiled and edit-
ed by Franz Kobler, distinguish-
ed Viennese-born writer and
scholar, well remembered for his
deservedly popular "A Treasury
of Jewish Letters," the new book
is a long-planned tribute to
mothers.
Selections from the Bible,
from letters, memoirs, poetry,
modern fiction, biography, and
drama, plus the editor's own
running commentary, create an
illuminating picture of the Jew-
ish mother and her rich and
varied family life. . The book
vividly reveals the mother's
centuries - 1 o n g transformation
in social position, customs, and
ideas.
Mothers of many countries are
repreSented, right up to our own
day-mothers of poets and states-.
men, artists and scholars, such as
Chaim Weizmann, Marcel
Proust, Louis D. Brandeis, Hen-
rietta Szold, and mothers. of the
unsung a n d the unknown.
The editor himself contributes
an unusually interesting essay
on the mother of Sigmund
Freud, drawing on recent and
hitherto unpublished material.
