Drive to Replenish
Clothing for Needy
School Children

To Charles Leuchtman

JWV Activities

e ngagemento

Co-operation of parent s,-
teachers and school students is
asked during the Spring Public
School Clothing Drive, April 25
through May 6, to replenish
stocks of used clothing given
free to needy children to keep
them in school. Heavy demands
during the first school term have
nearly exhausted stocks on
hand.
The need was cited by James
J. Cruikshank, president of De-
troit Public Schools Social Serv-
ice, Inc., sponsor of the drive in
co-operation with the Volunteers
of America, the social welfare
agency which launders or dry
cleans and repairs used shoes
and clothing received in the
drive.
More articles of clothing were
given out during the last four
months of 1954 than in any com-
parable period in the 19 year
history of the school clothing
program. Nearly 5,000 children
received 32,182 garments. This
was 5,000 more items of clothing
than were given to needy chil-
dren during the same period of
1953. Included were 3,690 pairs
of shoes, 1,100 pairs of galoshes,
2,738 pairs of trousers, 2,707
overcoats, 2,251 dresses, 4,914
pairs of hose, and 3,586 suits of
underwear.
