Recovery, Inc., Aid to Nervous People,
Forms Two Groups in Community

Recovery, Inc., a nation-wide
organization formed 17 years
ago by Dr. Abraham A. Low, a
prominent Chicago psychiatrist,
has organized two groups in the
Jewish community for group
therapy.
David Gutman is the leader of
the newest group, which meets
at 8 p.m., every Wednesday, in
the Jewish War Veterans Home,
4095 W. Davison. The second is
conducted by Esther Shillman
every Thursday evening, at Beth
Aaron Synagogue.
The two community branches
were formed when local leaders
of Recovery, Inc. thought per-
haps few Jewish people partici-
pated because the meetings were
held in churches, although the
organization is not religious in
nature.
The Recovery program is
is based on the precepts of Dr.
Low, who wrote the book "Men-
tal Health Through Will Train-
ing." The organization got its
start when Dr. Low brought
several of his pervous patients
together for group therapy.
By comparing symptoms and
reactions to various vexing
problems and by using Recov-
ery's now famous "spotting
technique" in 'individual cases,
many people have been taught
to lead lives free from fear.
Group leaders, like Gutman
and Miss Shillman, undergo
training to become leaders. At
meetings they guide panels of
members •who "spot" one an-
other's nervous pitfalls and of-
fer recommendations on how
they May be avoided.
Most of the members, before
going to Recovery meetings,
have suffered from headaches,
pains and fears of many things.
These, the leaders point out, haVe
been completely cleared up at
Recovery's group therapy meet-
ings.
.Recovery emphasizes that it is
not a medical group, and will
make no medical recommenda-
tions.
On the other hand,
numerous psychiatrists, seeing
the good Recovery has done,

recbmmend the organization to
their patients.
The principal behind the or-
ganization is that there is no
stigma or shame attached to be-
ing nervious. Recovery attempts
to bring about an understanding
of these fears, and thereby teach
its members to lead mentally
healthy lives.
One of Dr. Low's discples and
the founder of Recovery, Inc. in
Michigan is Mrs. Treasure Rice,
of 314 E. Grand River, Brighton,
Mich. She may be contacted for
information about the 50 groups
meeting in Detroit and other
parts of Michigan.
