Maimonides (the RAMBAM),
who is accepted as one of the
greatest Jewish philosophers and
teachers, is primarily known as
the author of the book of Com-
mandments "Sefer Hamitzvoth",
Conimentary- to the Mishna
"Perish Hatnishnah", the "Yad
Hachzakah" and many other
books and commentaries.
Mairnonides was unique in his
philosophical creativeness. The
book "Moreh Nevuchim" •w a s
originally written by Maimon-
ides in Arabic as "The Guide for
the Perplexed," and later trans-
lated by Shmuel Ebon Tibon
into Hebrew. In this book, Mai-
monides discusses the relation
of philosophy to Judaism, and
its logical explanation.
Rabbi Goldman, in his book,
discusses t h e differences be-
tween Judaism and Aristotelian-
ism, the reconciliation of which
was Maimonides' chief problem.
One difficulty lay in difference
of point of, view. Judaism is
based on belief, while Aristotle's .
appeal was reason. A philosoph-
er, . Maimonides believed, must
appeal to reason and yet avoid
scepticism. The book exhibits
Maimonides' general views and
principles in relation to God,
world, the life of man and his
goal.
Rabbi Goldman's book, when
published, will be another con-.
tribution to Jewish philosophy
this year, when Jews everywhere
are observing the 750th year of
Maimonides' death.
