Wayne Law Alumni to Honor Class of 1930

Friday, April 15, 1955

The Wayne University Law
Alumni Association will hold its
first annual - spring banquet
Tuesday evening, at the Vet-
erans Memorial Bldg., 151 W.
Jefferson. Cocktails will be
served at 6 p.m., and dinner will
begin at 7 p.m.
The banquet will honor the
25th anniversary of the gra-
duating class of 1930. John M.
Wise, Traffic Referee, is chair-
man of the evening.
Judg Ira W. Jayne, presiding
judge of Circuit Court, will pre-
side over the banquet as toast-
master. Judge Jayne taught
the . class of 1930 as his first
class. $ •

guests will be Federal Judge
Arthur F. Lederle, Recorder's

Betrothal Told

Vacationing in Chicago during the Passover season were Dr.
and Mrs. Samuel B. Danto, of Huntington Woods, Mr. and Mrs.
Louis Fried, of W. Seven Mile Rd., and their son and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Danto, of Curtis Ave.
Mr. and Mrs. Stanley I. Rosengarten, formerly of Clements
Ave., are now residing in their new home at 31779 Folkstone Dr ,
Farmington, Mich.
Mr. Jerome Stassen will present his pupils in a violin recital
at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, at Baldwin Recital Hall, Woodward at
Ferry. Among the performers will be Sherman Freund, Harvey
Klien, Judy Cohn and Susan Strauss. Assisting artist will be Betty
K.owalsky, pianist.
A surprise reception was given for Mr. and Mrs. Max Charness,
of Monterey Avenue, in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary,
by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bolton and Mr. and Mrs.
Sidney Charness, on April 3, 'on their return from Hot Springs,
Ark. In attendance were 100 friends and relatives. Congratulatory
messages were received from Montreal, New York, New Orleans

and Los Angeles.
Mr. Allen A. Warsen, director of the Adas Shalom Religious

School, formerly of Lawton Ave., is now residing at 21721 Parklawn,
Oak Park, Mich.
Mr. Stuart M. Wilhelm and Mr. - Donald Lakin, both of this
city, will leave May 6 for a trip to Miami Beach, Fla.

Bernard Backhaut Wins
Graduate Scholarship

Bernard Backhaut, who will
receive a bachelor of arts degree
in economics in June from the
University of Michigan, this
week received a scholarship
from the Graduate School of
Northwestern University.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Na-
Ulan Backhaut, of 3224 Calvert,
the young economics student
plans to do work leading to a
PhD in economics.
The scholarship is for $900,
and includes a cash grant of
$315, and tuition benefits of
$585.
Previous awards young Back-
haut has won include, the Uni-
versity of Michigan Regents
Scholarship, Literary Scholar-
ship and a general university
scholarship. He is a member of
Phi Eta Sigma honorary frater-
nity, having received straight As
in three out of the last six
semesters.

Elect Two Detroiters
To Prison DAV Posts

Two World War II veterans
from Detroit were elected to of-
fice last week in the world's
most unique veterans group—
the Disabled American Veterans
unit inside the State Prison at
Jackson, Mich.
Irving Reid was chosen ad-
vocate, and Norton Silvers, judge
advocate of Park Memorial
Chapter 105, DAV. Formal in-
stallation will be held at 9 a.m.,
May 14.
The prison's veterans unit is
an experiment in modern peno-
logy, and was organized two
years ago with the approval of
Warden William H. Bannan.
There are 2,400 veterans among

the inmate population of 6,400.
