Israel's President Inspects ORT School

Tercentenary Books
Feature JPS '55 List

The Jewish Publication Soci-
ety of America will publish 10
books in 1955, according to an
announcement by Edwin Wolf
II, president of the JPS. Five
books will be in the field of
Americana in celebration of the
Tercentenary.
Titles of the Americana books
are "Memoirs of American Jews,"
in two volumes, by Jacob R.
Marcus; "Three Years in Amer-
ica," also in two volumes, by
Benjamin II, with an introduc-
tion by Oscar Handlin; and "The
American Synagogue," by Rachel
Wischnitzer. The Marcus vol-
umes cover the middle period
(1776-1865) of American Jewish
history, while the Benjamin
books deal with men and com-
munities particularly Cali-
fornia — during the period prior
to the Civil War. The Wisch-
nitzer volume is a picture book
—with significant comments —
of the American Synagogue
fr Colonial days to the pres-
ent.

Israes President Itzhak Ben-Zvi (center) inspects activities of
machine shop students at ORT Vocational Center in Jerusalem.
After leaving the workshops he declared: "Blessed be the ini-
tiators and organizers of this work and may they see the fruits
of their labors." This year ORT schools in 16 cities of Israel will
haVe their largest enrollment. ORT receives funds from the
Joint Distribution Committee, a UJA member agency, for its trade
education programs in Israel, North Africa, Iran and Western
Europe.

The revised edition of "Juda-
ism in Theory and Practice" by
Dr. Beryl D. Cohon (Bloch) con-
tains chapters which have im-
portant changes on Israel and
Conservative Judaism, occasion-
ed by the establishment of the
Jewish state and by the new
regulations introduced in Con-
servative ranks.
While Rabbi Cohon's ap-
proaches are announced "ob-
jective," it is evident that he
writes his interpretations from
the Reform point of view.
Dealing with the Conservative
viewpoint, he asks some pointed
questions — whether Conserva-
tive Judaism can adhere to
tradition without making an
idolatry o f tradition, a n d
whether it can "save itself from
the embrace of nationalism."
On the latter score, Dr. Cohon
states:
"Conservative Judaism is wed-
ded to modern Jewish nation-
alism. The issue is once more
beteween Ezra and the prophets.
Ezra, it must be remembered,
subordinated 'the holy seed' to
the Lord of all."
Dealing with Israel, Rabbi
Cohon emphasizes that "Israeli
is a purely national term:. Is-
raelite or Jew are religious
terms."
It , is clear where the emphasis
lies in his book. He makes sharp
differentiations between t h e
Orthodox and Conservative and
the Reform viewpoints, and he
challenges the Conservatives as
to their traditionalism.
Dr. Cohon's most important
chapter is on "Why the Jews
Rejected Jesus." "Tragically,"
he writes, "Jesus the Christ is
still the Great Divide between
Christian and Jew." He explains
that "to the liberal Jew . . . .
Jesus is subordinated to a host
of other teachers and preachers
and martyrs of Judaism. He is
not the unique teacher; he is
one of a great many teachers."
