U.S. Opposes Revision of Calendar;
Calls Upon UN to Halt Its Study
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
State Department informed the
Secretary General of the thlited
Nations that the United States
does not favor a movement in
the United Nations to revise the
Mr. and Mrs.
calendar. Major Jewish religious
groups had opposed calendar re-
form because it would disrupt
the seven-day sabbatical cycle.

Schrier Bros. Prop.
cently with a Jewish delegation
which urged him to oppose the
UN proposal, told the UN secre-
tary General: "The U.S. Govern-
ment does not favor any action
by the UN to revise the present
calendar. This government can-
not in any w a y promote a
change of this nature, which
would intimately affect every in-
habitant of this country, unless
such a reform were favored by
a substantial majority of the
citizens of the United States
acting through thegr representa-
tives in the Congress."
Mr. Hoover emphasized that
"there is no evidence of such
support in the U.S. for calendar
reform" and that large numbers
of . U. S. citizens oppose it.
"Moreover," he added, "this gov-
ernment holds that it would be
inappropriate for the United Na-
tions, which represents many
different religious and social
beliefs throughout the world, to
sponsor any revision of the ex-
isting calendar that would con-
flict with the principles of im-
portant religious faiths.
"This government furthermore
recommends that no further
study of this subject should be
undertaken. Such 'a study would
require the use of manpower and
funds which could be more use-
fully devoted to more vital and
urgent tasks," Mr. Hoover stated.
(In London, recently, it was
reported to the Agudas Israel
European executive that the
Vatican will not support propos-
als before the UN for calendar
reform).
Germany Reported Cool
To Calendar Reform
BONN, (jTA)—Little enthusi-
asm for the current calendar re-
form proposals was expressed at
a meeting here of delegates
from all walks of German life,
who assembled pursuant to an
inquiry by the United Nations
Economic and Social Council
about the Federal Republic's
views on the subject.
Chief Rabbi Paul Holzer of the
British Zone represented the
Jewish community and, in the
name of the Central Jewish
Council, urged on religious
grounds that West Germany op-
pose the reform plans that will
be.„ discussed by the Economic
ail Social Council in May.
Spokesmen for trade, indus-
try, and agriculture all voiced
skepticism about the advisabil-
ity of effecting too radical -a
change. The Catholic and Prot-
estant Churches pointed to the
d.an.ger of injuring the religious
sentiments and sensibilities of
the faithful. Bonn Counsellor of
Ministry Dr: Walther .Schulth-
eiss, who was in the chair and
who is to formulate the West
German reply to the United Na-
tions, summed up by posing the
question whether respect for re-
ligious convictions and customs
could properly be subordinated
to considerations of technical
efficiency.
