Gov. Harriman Urges
U.S. to Guarantee
Israel's Frontiers •
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Governor
Averell Harriman called upon
the Administration in Washing-
ton to take the lead in convinc-
ing the Arab states that Israel's
existence is "inescapable and
irreversible" and to help ease
the "explosive situation" in the
Middle East by reaffirming the
guarantee of Israel's present
frontiers given in 1950 by the
United State s, Britain, and
France.
The Governor addressed 700
business and communal leaders
at the inaugural dinner of the
United Jewish Appeal of Greater
New York campaign, which seeks
the local share of the nation-
wide UJA goal of $100,000,000 for
1955. Close to $2,500,000 in
pledges were announced at the
dinner to bring above $8,000,-
000 the total raised as a result of
pre-dinner activities -conducted
for the United Jewish Appeal
since Feb. 1 in New York -City
and vicinity.
Agency Wall Newspaper
To Be Teachers' Aid
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A month-
ly, English language illustrated
wall newspaper titled, "Israel
Among the Nations," will be

ish school classrooms and club-
rooms.
The newspaper, prepared by
the Jewish Agency's Department
of Education and Culture, is a

gap in up-to-date material on
Israel suitable for the school-
age level. Tke paper is intended
primarily for the 11-12 year-old

In 1938 and 1939, some 20,000
German and Austrian Jews fled
to Shanghai because that inter7
national port was the only_ place
they . could take refuge without
a .visa. . .
In 1943 the Japanese military
"ordered all such Jews shut up
in the slums of Hongkew, which,
was circled with barbed wire
and henceforth became the
"Shanghai ghetto."
The Japanese acted under
Nazi pressure, but today the
German indemnification agencies
argue that no documentary
proof of such pressure has been
presented. Without such proof,
they contend, they are not in-
a position to pay out the $1 per
day which the Federal Indemni-
fication Law provides for-illegal
arrest carried out or instigated
by the Nazi authorities..
The issue has now reached' an

Nazi Victim Drops Dead
Before Medic-al Treatment
MUNICH, (JTA)—A victim of
Nazi persecution and concentra-

first post-war Yiddish paper in
Germany. Hermanowicz emi-
grated to Israel in 1948 and be-
came an official of the Minis-

to retire because of ill health
and came to Germany for treat-
