MONTREAL, (WJA) — In an- .

its conductor Herbert von Kara-

has issued a statement on the
previous record of the orches-
tra's conductor of which the
Jewish community s h o u 1 cl_ be
appraised "c ompletely aside
from the virtues and abilities of
Mr. von Karajan as an artist."
According to this statement,
von Karajan, Austrian by birth,
joined the Nazi Party in Austria
in April 1933 "at a time when
Austria w a s an independent
state and not part .of the Ger-
man Reich."
When the Austrian govern-
ment declared the Nazi Party to
be illegal, von Karajan went to
Germany and was, in 1935, ap-
p o i nted `Generalmusikdirektor'
of the Aachen opera. A personal
friend of Hermann Goering, he
was asked by the latter to come
to Berlin and to accept, the ap-
pointment of a Generalmustk-
direktor of Berlin.
Under the Nazi regime he ad-
vanced rapidly and "was known
throughout this period as an
ardent Nazi. The fact that 'his
wife was twenty-five per cent
Jewish — in the Nazi termino-
logy a `Mischling" of the second
order — did not prove detri-
mental to his career in t h e
Third Reich."
The statement conclude s:
"While it is known that von
Karajan underwent formal de-
nazification as many others,
_there is no record of his hav-
ing expressed any particular re-
grets or remorse either in word
or deed for his close association
with the. Nazi regime.
"T h e circumstances of v o n
K a r a j an's joining the Nazi
Party would preclude any of the
usual excuses that he did it out-
of expediency or to keep his job
and maintain his livelihood, as
has been the plea of many other
persons."
Austria to Renew
Talks in May
VIENNA, (JTA) — The Aus-
trian Cabinet decided to invite
all groups interested in the leg-
islative measures designed to
provide government aid to Aus-
trians who suffered under the
Nazi regime to participate in
discussions here. The talks will
open May 15.
Informed sources have re-
vealed that negotiations will be
held separately between the
Austrian government and each
of the interested groups. It is
understood that the most im-
portant talks will take place be-
tween the government and the
Jewish Claims Committee, rep-
resenting world Jewish organ-
izations and Austrian Jewry.
It is also understood that the
decision on who will be invited
has been left to the Chancellor.
It is believed that besideS the
Jewish Claims Committee, an
organization representing Jews
whO became Christian, repre-
sentative of the Catholic and
Protestant Churches in Austria,
and a New York group of former
Austrian Jews will be invited.
It was learned that the Peo-
ples Party and the Social Dem-
ocratic Party, which together
zomprise the • Austrian coalition
government, have reached
agreement on a number of
points over which they° have
been divided in the past.
It is understood that the So-
cialists have won acceptance of
their demand that compensation
and relief measures for political
victims of the Nazis be extended
to victims of political persecu-
tion from 1933 on. Between 1933
and 1938 when the Anschluss
took place, the Autrian Socialists
were persecuted by the Dolfuss
and Schuschnig administrations,

Peoples Party.
