Beware the Ides of March!
The Ides of March, which
commemorates the death of
Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.E., was
celebrated at the annual
banquet • sponsored by Latin
students at Berkley High on
March 15, The traditional slave
costumes, made from burlap or
old dark cicith, were worn by
Nancy Cohen, Charles Gross
and Carolyn Gold, members of
the Latin II classes.
Mike Sklar, Ron Onkin, Ellen
Schiller and Judy Stutz, being
members of the Latin IV classes,
wore white togas which identi-
fied them as of higher rank. The.
menu was written in Latin on
parchment, and entertainment
consisted of singing songs in
Latin and participating in skitS
and games.
Among the faculty of Berkley
High is Ray Adler who teaches
English and Speech. It was dis-
covered recently that Mr. Adler
has a broadway "past," and is a
co-composer of a new song
which is presently in the cus-
tody of the Gaylords. His most
extensive work was done in
radio, television, nightclubs and
the theater. One of the per-
formances' in which -Mr. Adler
participated was "Born Yester-
day."
The Berkley High PTSA (Par-
ent Teacher Stuc:ent Associa-
tion) held its March meeting
on Tuesday in the high school
auditorium. The group broke up
into buzz sessions to discuss
plans for • an after-the-prom
party. Mike Sklar, Ricky Schil-
ler and Judy Stutz were among
the student chairmen.
The Senior class of Royal Oak
High has olaosen "It matters not
how long we live, but how" as
its motto. White carnations were
chosen for class flowers and
blue and white were the class
colors selected.

Jordan Forces Double
Debate at Harvard U.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. , (JTA) —
An unusual debate in which the
principal speakers made their
addresses in different buildings
on different nights was the' re-
sult here of Jordan's refusal to
recognize Israel's existence.
Abdul Mohem Jordan-
ian Ambassador to the United
States, addressed the Harvard
Law School Forum on Arab-Is-
. rael differences, and the follow-
ing night's Forum featured
Mordecai Kidron, member of the
Iirael delegation to the United
Nations, who substituted for the
ailing Ambassador Abba E. Eban.
In addition to the two official
views, the Forum presented what
were termed the unbiased views
of an independent nation and
the Christian pro-Zionist com-
munity. Under this plan, Ambas-
sador Rifa'i was paired with
Stringfellow Barr, former presi-
dent of St. John's College, who
took the pro-Israel stand; and
Kidron was opposed by Dr. Ben-
jamin Nunez, Costa Rica repre-
sentative to the United Nations.
Reports preceding the Forum
program also indicated that a
number of other Middle East ex-
perts and UN leaders had been
scheduled to participate, but had
backed out on one pretext or
another as the issue continued
to grow more "senitive" and
While the Gaza clash was still
on the agenda of the UN Secur-
ity Council.

SOC's 'Room and Borscht'
To Bring Catskills to Suburbs

By The Oak-Woodser

Ever hear of Fressinger's
mountain hide-away? Neither
did we until this week when we
learned it was a resort in the
Catskills, invented in the minds
of fully 20 writers who collabor-
ated in producing the annual
show of the South Oakland
County Chapter of Hada.ssah.
Fressinger's is the setting of
"Room and Borscht," the title of
this year's musical revue and at
that plush paradise the audience
will be introduced to some very
human and other .very looney
characters, from the athletic
"monster" who waits for the
call, "tennis anyone," to the poor
gal looking for a rich hubby.
Nearly 50 SOC members and
their husbands will parade be-
fore the footlights on April 26
and 27 when "R o o m and
Borscht" is presented in Mum-

ford High School. Another 50
had to be turned away because
there just. weren't parts avail-

able.
Among the talented personali-
ties playing the roles around
which the action revolves are
Sharon Weinstock (formerly
Lynn Sharon of television prom-
inance), Barbara Lenchner, who
has appeared as soloist with the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra,
Harry Jacobson, Esther Citrin,
Henry Koloff, Burton Siegel and
Irving Green.
Felix Reznick, a member of the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra, is
directing the musical portions of
the show, which will feature
parodies on a number of hit
songs and an original composi-

tion, "Take a Chance on a Sum-
mer Romance," written by Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest Jay and Irvine
Green.
Throughout the year, SOC
Chapter has presented numer-
ous other productions, all having
to do with religious or organi-
zational themes. Being a fund-
raising venture, "Room and
Borscht" is offered as strictly
entertainment.
The show idea for fund-raising
developed when the Chapter was
formed in 1952. Although it is a
departure from Hadassah's usual
Honor Roll fund-raiing plan, it
was adopted to meet SOC Chap-
ter's national quota.
Members found in trying to
soliCit Honor Roll funds that
most families in the area were
paying for landscaping, storms
and screens and other essentials
new • home-owners get involved
in, and, consequently were un-
able to subscribe to Honor Roll.

If you recall the success of
"Carmen Cohen," the. first
SOC production, and last
year's "Captain Sammy's Show-
boat," you'll understand why
members have decided to con-
tinue the show as their an-
nual fund-raising program.

As an added feature this year,
through arrangements with the
Elkin Hotel and Travel Bureau,
two weekend • vacations for two,
complete with' transportation,
will be awarded, one on each
night to Oakton Manor Resort,
Lake Pewaukee, Wis.
Tickets are available from Mrs.
Sherman Davidson, overall tick-
et chairman, LI. 5-4559, or from
Mrs. Arthur Winer, business
manager of the show, LI. 1-3399.

Solicitor General Simon E.
Sobeloff and Maxwell M. Rabb,
secretary of the President's
Cabinet, are among the 12 na-
tionally-known leaders who have
accepted membership on the
Jury of Awards which will select
the recipients of the National
Jewish Welfare Board's (JWB)
Frank L. Well Awards for 1955,
