Spirit of Purim Engulfs Community

Religious Schools, Groups
Schedule Festive Events

One of the truly joyful holi-
days in Jewish tradition will be
celebrated beginning at sun-
down Monday and continuing on
Tuesday. Most congregations
have planned services Monday
evening, at which the Megillah,
or Book of Esther, will be read.
(See Synagogue calendar on
Page 8 for times.)
Purim celebrates the deliver-
ance of the Jews from the de-
struction planned by Haman, the
vizier of King Ahasuerus of Per-
sia. The name Purim has been
translated to mean "lots," conse-
quently the festival is known as
the Feast of Lots.
The term was chosen because,
as it is recorded, Haman and his
men drew lots to determine the
exact day.that the Jews would be
destroyed. The story ends hap-
pily with intercession by Mor-
decai and Esther with the king,
thus preventing Haman from
carrying out his plan. ---
Commemorating the occasion,
synagogues, religious schools and
social groups have planned num-
erous celebrations. A schedule
of programs is listed below:
