McNamara Dingell Join New Effort to Revise `Shameful' McCarran Measure

LISTENING

IT WAS a tremendous sight
when over 150 fellows, gathered
somewhat on the spur of the
moment, arose as one during
dinner and applauded heartily
as Veterans Administration con-
tact man Joe Cohen made a
surprise appearance at the af-
fair given in his honor, last
week, at Carl's Chop House .. .
Joe is still recovering after a
bitter battle in which he final-
ly slammed the door in death's
face while the Grim Reaper
waited for him at Sinai hospi-
tal . . . arta he wanted to come
to the affair . . . if only for a
short while ... '. to accept the
sincere tribute being paid in his
honor . . . The entire upstairs
at Carl's had been taken over
for the evening . .. and fellows
from just about every walk of
life enjoyed themselves while at-
testing that the humanitarian-
ism shown by Joe in his life of
helping others has certainly not
gone by unnoticed!

A LOT OF folks at the Purim
costume carnival ball of Adas
Shalom Synagogue, March 13,
are going to look twice this year
. . . Rabbi Jacob Segal is going
to have a tough time fooling as
many as he did last year . . . He
came dressed as Albert Einstein
and those not knowing who he
really was had to wait until he
was given a prize for his cos-
tume before finding out . . .
Word now going around is to
be on the lookout for the per-
son least likely to be recognized
at this year's Purim Ball . . .
It'll probably be Rabbi Segal!

Thirteen members of the Sen-
ate, and eight members of the
House including Senator McNa-
mara and Congressman Dingell
of Michigan simultaneously in-
troduced a comprehensive im-
migration and citizenship bill
completely revising and replac-
ing the McCarran-Walter Act.
In an accompanying state-
ment, the sponsors, headed by
Senator Herbert H. Lehman in
the Senate, and by Rep. Emanuel
Celler in the House, called on the
Administration, and on the lead-
ership of both Houses, to re-
deem the campaign pledges and
reiterated commitments of both
major parties by facilitating
prompt consideration of propos-
als to overhaul and replace the
existing "discriminatory, oppres-
sive, and ruthless immigration
and citizenship laws now on our
statute books."
The spon§ors called for early

town, remembers being back-
stage some years ago in New
York when a wealthy woman
who had been taken to a recital
of the famed Budapest Quartet
was later introduced to the first
violinist . . . "It's a shame your
little orcheastra hasn't got
money enough to expand," she
gushed. "I'm going to write you
out a check. We'll make that
band of yours as big as Tommy
Dorsey's!"

SAAD means "to lend a help-
ing hand" . . . It is the name of
a local charitable group that
each year holds an affair to
raise funds for just that pur-
pose . . . Since being organized
in April, 1948, Saad's growing
list of causes benefiting by pro-
ceeds of its affairs include mus-
cular distrophy, cerebral palsy,
leader dogs for the blind, re-
tarded children and hearing
aids for the deaf . . . The group
is taking on the dreaded Park-
inson's Disease as its future
work, hoping to make it a per-
manent project . . and this
year will hold its annual fund
raising affair . March 23 .. .
8 p.m. . . . giving a premiere
film showing at the Cannon
Theater . . . Mrs. Alvin Sofferin
is president of Saad.

BILLY BARNETT, young son
of band leader Sam Barnett,
came home from Sunday School
humming a gay little tune . . .
When Sam commented on it,
and asked Billy if he'd learned
it in Sunday School, Billy re-
plied, "Sure, and you ought to
know it, daddy. It's the Purim
Mambo!"

WHILE IN FLORIDA, Paul
Marx, wearing his fishing li-
cense on the back of his hat . .
he wears the same one year
after year for good luck . . . took
6-year-old daughter, Jeanne,
fishing with him . . . Paul wasn't
doing so good, and finally little
Jeanne suggested, "Daddy, turn
your hat around so the fish can
see your license." . . . (It's al-
ways been one of Paul's favorite
expressions around the house
after listening to hard luck
stories by fellow fishermen.)

and intensive hearings on their
new bill, and on other proposals
to revise and amend the McCar-
ran-Walter Act, which was en-
acted in 1952.
"In the present state of world
affairs," the joint statement is-
sued from the Office of Senator
Lehman said, "we dare no longer
tolerate on our statute books
the present shameful law which
is losing us friends abroad daily,
holding us up to contempt in
the eyes of free mankind, and
working havoc among our own
people.
"It is intolerable that we
should continue to maintain our
own Iron Curtain—against visit-
ors and alien immigrants alike—
while criticizing the Iron Curtain
abroad. And the daily examples
of senseless cruelty and injustice
against aliens already resident
here, or recently arrived here,
makes our advocacy of justice
abroad seem like hollow sham
and pretense.
"All decent-minded Americans,
if " they knew the facts about
present law, would join in de-
manding that Congress prompt-
ly remove the many boob: - traps
for citizens, for resident and
immigrant aliens, and for visit-
ors, now secreted in the McCar-
ran-Walter Act. The law is a
mess which must be cleaned up
without delay."
