9—DETROIT JEWISH Aiews—Friday, February 25, I455 N CURT IN FOR ISRAEL As it approaches its seventh birthday, Israel is confronted by problems that have a profound bear- ing on its future. The Arab states are moving forward with an intense campaign to throttle the life of Israel. They are seeking to isolate Israel behind an economic cur- tain. Through an airtight boycott, through a block- ade of the Suez, they are seeking to envelop Israel in a curtain of economic strangulation, At the same time, the Western policy of shipping substantial quantities of arms. to the Arab states is encouraging Israel's hostile neighbors to surround her with a steel curtain of military might. But there is another curtain, equally dangerous, equally threatening to Israel's forward march of peaceful progress. That is the curtain of indifference, the curtain of lack of understanding of Israel's role in preserving the Mediterranean region for freedom, We must not forget that any success that is registered by her enemies against Israel will repre- sent a serious setback to the strengthening of de- mocracy in the Middle East. Therefore, it is our responsibility to preserve the cause of freedom, by re-enforcing the economic defense of Israel. For Israel's survival and her ability to grow as an important partner of the United States and other free nations depends on her economic strength. • On Tuesday, March 1st, the progress and prob- lems of Israel and the central role of economic up- building will be discussed by one of the foremost statesmen of our nation -- an eloquent and deeply sincere spokesman for human decency and justice— Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon. Senator Morse will be the principal speaker at a dinner at the Hotel Statler. There will also be an after-dinner concert by one of the world's musical immortals—the one and only Mischa Elman. You can lift the curtains of hostility that sur- . round Israel by affirming your faith in and support of this plucky young democracy. MISCHA ELMAN SEW.
