Official Believes Israel,
Could Defeat the Arabs
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
State Department official said
here that the Arabs worry that
Israel could beat them in a mili-
tary showdown and made known
that it was his opinion that Is-
rael probably could.
Richard H. Sanger, chief pub-
lic affairs adviser to Assistant
Secretary of State George V.
Allen, told the Middle East In-
stitute that Israel holds the mil-
itary upper hand because it is
more technically advanced than
the Arabs, many of whom he de-
scribed as still living in the
"Twelfth Century."
Mr. Sanger described the Is-
raelis as efficient soldiers able
to employ the logistics of mod-
ern war. He charactekized the
Arabs as still thinking in terms
of the individual rifleman.

-California Court Rules in
Favor of Parochial Schools
SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA)—The
California District Court has
ruled that the town of Piedmont,
Calif., may not forbid the erec-
tion of parochial schools in resi-
dential areas.
The case involved a suit by a
Roman Catholic group which
sought to build a parochial
school but was denied a permit
by Piedmont officials. The Amer-
ican Jewish Congress filed a
"friend of the court" brief, argu-
ing that the Constitution guar-
anteed parents the right to send
their children to parochial
schools rather than public
schools, if their religious convic-
tions so dictate.

Of the Jews who managed to
remain in Prague thrOughout
the Nazi holocaust, or who had
returned there, some 2,000 • were
able to leave for other countries
in the first few postwar years.
Then the newly - establshed
Communist regime put a virtual
end to legal emigration.
In connection with the Sian-
ksy trial, many Jews were ar-
rested and it is believed that
more than 300 of them are still
in jail. Subsequently, the resi-
dents of the old age home and
other Jewish individuals were
forcibly moved to the provinces.
The inverted age structure,
with its heavy preponderance of
elderly people, - accounts for
many deaths and few births.
Government employees shun
identification with *Jewish life.
Due to all these reasons, the
community's membership rolls
listed only 1,863 names as of
last May, the report said.
