American Zionism's contribu-
tions to the history and culture
of the United States will be- re-
viewed by prominent speakers
and by the presentation of a
dramatic stage 'performance, at
a meeting observing the Ameri-
can Jewish Tercentenary, Mon-
day evening, at Hunter College
Assembly Hall, New. York.
To be held under the auspices
of the American Zionist Coun-
cil, which represents all the
Zionist organizations in the
country, the celebration will fea-
ture an address by Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver, of Cleveland, vet-
eran Jewish leader.
`Dr. Silver was former chair-
man of the American Settion of
the Jewish Agency for Palestine,
president of the Zionist Organ-
ization of America, and chair-
man of the American Zionist
Emergency Council, which was
reorganized in 1949 and.. became
the American Zionist Council.
The present chairman of the
Zionist Council, Rabbi Irving
Miller, will preside.

Converted Kitchener
Creates Hassidic Woes

NEW YORK, (AJP) - Ortho-
dox JeWish circles in the greater
New York area are confronted
with a new phenomenon - and
a problem. Louis Kitchener, a
Christian and a former General
in the U.S. Second Army, wants
to be a Hassid among Hassidim.
But the Hassidim in New York
are at a loss to know what to
do about him. Not yet accepted
into the fold, Kitchener is
looked upon by Orthodox rabbis
and YeShivah students with awe
and wonder. They .find it hard
to understand why he wants to
become a Hassid. Why not just
a simple Jew?
Theoretically a Christian until
he is accepted, Kitchener ob-
serves kashrut, the sabbath
and the holidays, and he will
never eat without a hat.
More than that, he lectures in
synagogues, urging the congre-
gants to become better Jews.
Only .when. the Jews return to
Torah, he maintains, can the
world be helped. World peace
can come only through Judaism,
he insists.
Born in Texas in 1904, Kitch-
ener's father was a Methodist
and his mother -a Baptist. He
graduated West Point in 1926.
During World War II he served
as a commander in the air
corps, later becoming active in
the Chemical Warfare Depart-
ment:

Goiter's 'City of Hope,'
Praising Duarte Center,
Published by Putnam

.

Samuel H. Goiter's "City of
Hope," published by G. P. Put-
nam's Sons, 210 Madison Ave.,
New York, tells the story of the
renowned national institution in
Duarte, Calif. Goiter is execu-
tive director of the City of Hope.
Uniquely treating the text as
a story he is telling to his 17-
year-old daughter,. Irma, Goiter,
as he explains in the forword, is
not concerned with the "brick
and mortar" deVelopment, but
with "the story behind the
story."
He relates the well-known tale
of the institution's development
in 1913 from two tents in the
desert near Los Angeles to its
present status as a leading cen-
ter in the treatment of cancer.
leukemia, heart trouble and
tuberculosis.
The book's principal charac-
ters are actual patient s, of
whom Goiter writes with warm
expression, as in the case of
"Gertie who was loved by all
who knew her." The sincerity
displayed in the institution and
by its staff conveys the mes-
sage of the City of Hope, that
here is a "hotel" for patients,
not a charity ward.
Reiterated is the City of Hope
slogan: "None who can pay
enter, none who enter can
pay." Also adopted as the City
of Hope policy is the famous
saying of Louis Pasteur : "We do
not ask an unfortunate, 'What
country do you come from?' or
`What is your religion?' We say
to him, "You suffer, that is
enough. You belong to us; we
shall make you well."
The book is dedicated to "all
those men and women,- living
and dead. whose dedication to
an ideal first brought a unique
institution into being upon the
American scene-and then, they
called it the City of Hope"
