(Copyright 1955, Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, inc.)

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Through-
out the entire civilized world,
the Egyptian government was
roundly condemned for its sav-
age haste in executing death
sentences imposed On two Jews
convicted of espionage by a mil-
itary court on the basis of con-
fessions extracted by violence
and torture.
The two men, Dr. Moishe Mar-
zouk and Shmuel Azzar, were
hanged despite a direct plea by
the French government to the s
Egyptian authorities, an action
by the United States State De-
partment, the nature of which
has not been disclosed, and pro-
tests and pleas by organizations
and individuals throughout the
entire free world.
In Paris, M. Edgar Faure,
the Foreign Minister; sum-
moned the Egyptian ambassa-
dor to the Quai D'Orsay and
delivered a • rebuke 'to the
Egyptian government for
flouting the French clemency
plea for the two men. M.
Faure told the envoy that the
French governinent was "up-
set" by the hangings. One of
the executed men, Shmuel Az-
zar, was a Tunisian national.
In Buenos Aires, President
Juan D. Peron publicly an-
nounced his sympathy for the
families of the two martyred
Jews.

abroad condemned the Egyptian
regime and voiced • sharp criti-
cism of the execution which the
New York Herald Tribune called
"a setback to orderly processes
in the Middle East."
In Beersheba the municipal
council named • streets in
memory of Marzouk and Az-
zar. Members of the municipal
council made visit to the sister

of Azzar who is a resident of
Beersheba to express their
condolences.
The Jewish Agency executive
issued a scathing denunciation
of the conduct of the Cairo "spy"
trial and the execution of the
two Jews, and declared the trial
was "marked by devilish tor-
ture of the accused which re
sulted in a murderous judgment
and tryannical sentences."
In Paris, a huge crowd over-
flowed a memorial meeting held
under the auspices Of the Zion-
ist Federation of France.
In Buenos Aires, all Jewish
shops closed for a two-hour
period of mourning for the exe-
cuted Jews.
In Canada, the Canadian Jew-
. h Congress and the United
Zionist Council of Canada
voiced their sense of "deep out-
rage" at the execution by Egypt
of the two Jews.

of the two Jews in Egypt. A r es-
olution characterizing the exe-
cution as "a blow to humanity
and to peace" was adopted at
