Mrs. Ludwig Kaphan, national

ORT and a member of the World
ORT board, will speak at an open
meeting of Michigan Region of

Last summer, Mrs. Kaphan, to-

American ORT, became the first
representative of ORT in Ameri-

Here, in this primitive coun-
try, as it . is described by Mrs.
Kaphan, there are 80,000 Jews
who are being given the first
opportunity to acquire skillls
through ORT. Half of the com-
munity lives in Teheran.
Although the Jews were
released from the ghetfo 25
years ago by Reza Shah
Pahlevi, father of the present
monarch, their status has not
been altered. Illiteracy is high,
poverty is so common .the
people know barely any way
of life. Only five percent live
outside the ghetto. -
Amidst this poverty, Mrs. Kap-
han reports, on ORT city has

first and foremost is the job
of improving the health and
morale of its boys and girls.
In Casablanca, Mrs. Kaphan
relates, one can best see how
Women's American ORT's four-
point program .works at its maxi-
mum level of accomplishments.
The program includes MOT
(Materials for Overseas Train-
ing), guardianship, scholarship
and the more recently-formed
health setup.
The largest part of the work
done by Women's American ORT
is in its MOT program, which
provides the material, facilities
and teachers for ORT schools.
At AniereS, Switzerland, is the
ORT Teachers' Training Insti-
tute, which trains top students
to become teachers in ORT
schools throughout Europe,
North Africa and in Israel.
The scholarship program es-
tablished by Women's American
ORT helps pay the bill for send-
i n g these promising young
people to the Anieres school or
to a similar school in Paris.
The last of the four major
program, which reduces dis-
ease at the ORT schools. The
program is particularly needed
in North Africa and the Arab
states where health conditions
are extremely low.
ORT maintains over 300
schools in the world, with about
54 percent of all the vocational
training schools located in Is-
rael to aid in the economic fight
being waged by the Jewish state.
